  • Nvidia 1070GTX or 1080GTX

Since upgrading my screen and projector, I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card so that I can crank the detail right up.

Ive been looking at the 1070 and 1080. The price difference is a fair bit, but is the performance difference going to be noticeable on TGC / FSX between these 2 cards? I've read that the 1070 is as good as a 980GTX Ti. I don't want to fork out £400 on the 1070 and find that it doesn't perform well enough!
Apart from sticking another 8gb of RAM in my PC, the rest of it should be more than capable.
I just skimped with the GFX card when building as I only had an archery weave screen and a 720p projector!

    Any advice would be appreciated.

I have the GTX980Ti and have no issues running things very smoothly with high detail at 1080p. No complaints at all with mine while running TGC. I assume the 1070 would be pleanty to get a quality experience.

I too will be upgrading, but I am waiting for Black Friday/Cyber Monday to grab a card.

The 1080 looks to be about 25% better than the 1070. My consensus is that the 1070 will be more than enough to run the game at the highest quality settings, where you won't notice a difference having a 1080 unless on specific courses with a ton of trees and water.

            Thanks for the replies.
My budget got blown a long time ago! Now I'm just adding the final pieces. The cost isn't important - however I don't see the point in buying something unnecessarily good when I don't need it.
My PC will only ever be for TGC / FSX, so I might as well just get the 1070 as it sounds like it will do as good a job as the 1080 for what I need.

I'm currently in the US, and I can get the 1070 for the same price in dollars as in pounds at home. Although the exchange rate is terrible, it's almost a 1/3 saving. Might as well get it here!

I too am running with the 1070....plus recording my rounds and I run with 100+ FPS...it's fantastic. I'm sure the 1080 is faster and better but I honestly don't think you would ever use the extra power .....unless you are doing something else.

Given that then a 1060 would still run well over 60 fps and you wouldn't see any difference! Your 1070 is wasted money if a 1060 does the job with power to spare. I knowthe OP is asking about 1070 versus 1080 but I haven't seen anyone point out what buying a 1070 actually gets over just a 1060. Somehow we're convincing ourselves that the 1080 is overkill and not needed but maybe the same goes for the 1070 too!

I would tend to agree with FC. I have a 980ti which is very comparable to the 1070. I have run the following cards. GTX 680,970,980ti. The 680 is weak but works well on lower settings. The 970 which is comparable to the 1060 runs TGC much better. The 980ti which is comparable to the 1070 is better but not really worth the extra money. If you are currently running less than a 970 the 1060 or1070 is a worthwhile upgrade. If you are running a 970 or better, you may want to save your money and maybe skip this gen. And the only way to get higher than 60FPS is to shut off V sync.

My current card is a 760, and is ok at low levels.
I'd rather have too much power than not enough, so I went with the 1070.
Up until a few months ago, the 980ti was the best card out there and ran everything.
According to all the reviews, the 1070 performs better than the 980ti on most tests... so it should be more than capable of running anything I ever need it for.
I'd hate to spend the money on a 1060 and find that it stutters on some courses, hence why I've gone with the 1070.

760 to 1070 is a big leap forward and well worth it. If you have the money, the 1070 or 1080 is the way to go. For those that want decent performance and want to save some money.... go with the 1060.

The 760 was a cheap stopgap until I upgraded my screen / projector. I didn't see the point in outputting a HQ image, when my projector / screen weren't capable of displaying it.
Hopefully the 1070 is the missing piece in my puzzle to completing my build.
Then I can use my setup and be fully satisfied with what I've built!!

I bought a Gigabit 1060 card with 6GB ram and while I haven't been able to try out the sim aspect yet, I've played Doom on Ultra settings and it blazes through without hiccups. Not sure how taxing the TGC is but for about $250 I think the 1060 will do the job at 60FPS easily...

A 1060 will definitely be more than enough for TGC at 60 fps. I have a 960 and it handles TGC very well. The 1060 performs twice as well as the 960. So I'm considering upgrading to the 1060 due to the fact that it's so freaking cheap. Amazing how much everything evolved in performance and price with these new cards.

evolved? These guys are sitting on this technology laughing. They barely even have a competitor.

The 1070 is $380 where as the 980ti was >$600 before the new cards were introduced. I call that a pretty good evolution of price and performance correlation.

As an aside, Dell is now offering the mobile version of the 1070 in their Alienware 15" and 17" laptops, for those who prefer a laptop form factor. They advised that the 1080 will be available mid-November.
