4:3 vs 16:9 for sim use

Hello all,

Last winter I made it through with a garage sim build using the Net Return Pro with their simulator screen. That was great for a temporary setup, but I'm now fortunately in a position where I have bought a new house with an unfinished bonus room over the garage that I am going to turn into my permanent, year round sim room. The room is large at 18x23 with 10.5 foot ceilings. I'm just starting to piece together my build (I set up my net, country club elite, and GC2 just using my laptop screen in the interim) and I'm planning on ordering the screen first to at least get functional as I imagine the finish work on a 414 square foot room will be expensive after buying a new house, moving expenses, etc.

What is everyone's thought on a 4:3 vs a 16:9 for sim use? My GT1080 can do either. The way the door is and the ceilings start to arc in, I think I can do a taller screen if I do 4:3, as 12x9 will work but 16x9 may be a squeeze. I'll have to take some more measurements to be sure.

If you have the room, I would go as wide as you can. I feel the wider, the more realistic. I also think it is more realistic if the projection goes all the way to the floor. You could likely run in 16:9 mode and just move the projector forward a bit and make if fit for your specific screen availability. I would suggest you do some experimenting with various setups before you permanently mount your projector. If I were in your shoes, I would make the projection as large as possible for the space you have. One thing to keep in mind, as the screen gets larger, the pixels will be more visible.

Can also do 14x9 screen and run it in 16x9 mode and just let it bleed off into black theater curtains which protrude 3" back from the screen, I actually do this with my 12x9 screen

Don't forget to consider 16:10. It fills a 14x9 almost perfectly.

I moved from a 10 x 10 with 4:3 to a 17 x 10 with 16:9 with a GT 1080 and I love it. I agree with BW that the wider the better the experience......it's like a boat, you always want a bigger one.

Looks like it might have to be a 12x10, based on the way ceiling profile is in the room. If I did a 16:9 it would end up being a smaller screen. Sorry guys, I could have avoided making this thread altogether if I had waiting until I broke out the tape measure!
