  • Is the premium screen worth it?

I was late to the party on the straight from the mill group purchase and am now looking at the options. Carl's seems to have quite a following within the forum. I was curious if anyone had any thoughts or opinions on Carl's premium screen given the increase in price from preferred.

Having the sim in the garage, the biggest thing is sound and bounce back. Image quality is a plus, but not the most important.

I bought a super Tex (affordable impact screen). It lasted less than 6 months. I bought a pr20 archery net screen. I have heard how poor the image quality is but to be honest, it’s pretty good imho. The archery netting also lasts much longer than impact screens. I know guys with high spin that the screen has lasted years and not months.

I have the same question as the OP regarding Carls products. I am also less concerned with image quality and more concerned with sound and bounce back.

I ended up getting the preferred model from Carl's. It's a bit louder than I would like, the bounce back is minimal and can't comment on the image quality yet (black friday purchase for the projector).

I'm hoping I can find some sound dampening ideas without breaking the bank. Saving $200 on the screen may be a moot point if the sound dampening build out is pricey.

I bought the bottom of the line Carls screen to replace the one I got from Spectrum Golf almost 2 years ago. It has minimal bounce back and noise is fine. The quality of picture is fine. I cant see how the premium and preferred would be that much better. Anyway, I am perfectly happy with this one. We will see how it holds up but performance and picture are good. Just bought the raw material and use tarp clips and ball bungees from Home depot.

Similar to Bnorman58 I went with the bottom of the line screen. I agree on the bounce back and noise. The picture is good, but there is definitely some bleed through onto my back wall. I am thinking of putting a white sheet between the screen and the net I have behind the screen to see if that helps at all. The picture bleed through hasn't made me regret not buying the next level up since it is a sacrificial piece but if you are looking for an awesome crisp picture I would look into material that is more tightly woven. I also did the rough cut and just used tarp clips/bungees to hold it up.

I too went with Carl's low end screen and have been very happy with in. Never had anything else to compare it with though. I put a cloth painters tarp behind it for the bleed through.

I've gone with archery baffle type screen and get very low noise, little bounceback and image is good enough.

I got the Carl's premium and while I have nothing to compare it to, I am super happy. It is flat as a board, the weave looks nice, sound is nothing that made me think about it so that is good and I am still waiting on a projector. Bounce back is awesome. It is almost accidentally ball rerun because the carpet I have down Is thin on concrete. Only high shots bounce but it I from my carpet not where it lands after the screen. Super happy with it and I am hoping the picture looks good.

i went with premium because i want to watch football and hd stuff out there since I have it all set up anyway.

Thinking of getting a new screen myself as my Carl's lowest model is starting to show some wear. Looks like you can get a par2pro new SQ screen for around $200 unfinished as opposed to the Carl's at around $450 also for the unfinished. Both 10x10 for me. Cory at par2pro told me the SQ is on par with Carl's premium.. just a heads up if you're lookingmto save some money and get a good quality screen. The price does jump of course if you get it finished but them.

MyGolfSpy was using both Carl's Premium and Preferred for testing equipment and balls...so they wrote a review with close up pics of wear at the major target spot after many thousands of hits.
The Premium was better than the Preferred in every way...picture quality, sound, bounce back and wear. About a thousand bucks for 12' x 10' finished.

I have the standard I can send you. The premium is suppose to light years ahead of that.

I bought the premium on the basis of that same MygolfSpy review, combined with the fact that there were a bunch of screens in the clearance section at like 60% off reg price... there's a disclaimer saying that there are defects in them, but I honestly couldn't tell on mine! As for the image quality, I tested it with a friend's Epson for image (no hitting since I haven't begun my sim build yet) and the image quality was awesome... I love this screen already!

A lot of the clearance screens are already gone, but there are still some left... here's the link if anyone's interested:

Like gnomike I found the Carl's clearance section. I purchased the standard at first being the cheap that I am. I loved it so much I purchased a preferred model as a backup. Both screens I got for 60% due to defects. The standard has been hanging for almost a month and I still can't find the issue. The preferred I've opened the box and can't find the issue.

I'm not a sales person for Carls, but trust you can't go wrong with them.

At the prices in the clearance section, i came close to ordering one each of standard, preferred, and the premium, but then i told myself to get a grip lol. Almost wish I had, just to have first hand knowledge of the differences. how would you describe the standard vs the pref?

I’ve only used the standard so far. It has about 5000 shots into it. I still think the quality is great. You can tell where the balk has hit but that’s about it. I’ve been watching amazon prime videos on it and the image looks great.

I opened the box and check through the preferred. The material does appear a little better. The gap between the weave seems smaller and tighter.

When I’m watching video you can see the video on the back side of the screen. Something like light bleeding through. I would suspect this would be reduced with the preferred or premium.

I almost purchased the premium to start but was concerned about it being clearance. Kinda of wish I had now, but still I got two screen for 250 bucks.

I first found Carl’s on amazon and their screen on Amazon for 255. That was for the standard.

So glad I found the clearance section.
