  • Is the premium screen worth it?

I was late to the party on the straight from the mill group purchase and am now looking at the options. Carl's seems to have quite a following within the forum. I was curious if anyone had any thoughts or opinions on Carl's premium screen given the increase in price from preferred.

Having the sim in the garage, the biggest thing is sound and bounce back. Image quality is a plus, but not the most important.

With Carl's Premium being such a good screen, I'm wondering how often they put stuff in the clearance section. They're still not as good a deal as the Direct from the Mill screens, but they come a lot closer and there's no wait... as long, that is, as they have clearance available

"Direct from the Mill screens" do you have details on these?

BTW I see Carl's has a new batch of screen in clearance. (8) Sizes-- Carl's Standard Golf Simulator Impact Screen with Finished Edges

This is the first one I purchased from them due to the cost. I am still currently using and loving it. Later on I went back and purchased the preferred model as well.

I ordered the preferred. How's the image quality on that?

I can PM you an image of my standard for an idea.

I've only opened the box and check for the defect on my preferred. The image just on the standard is like WHOA! The guy at Carl's told me the preferred is head and shoulders above the standard.
The material does appear to be better and a tighter weave.

I might eventually resell the standard and give away my older projector to someone starting out.

Not trying to insult you, but please ensure you hang it on the correct side. There is a front and back. People are in a rush to hang it and end up hitting the wrong side. :-)

Sure please send a Pic, are you installing the preferred?

Once I mess up the standard I will. I figure I will beat the hell out of the standard first. Then sell it at a extreme discount or give it away.

Stingreye - are you still around and using your PR20 Net from West Coast netting? What were the specs on the 'binding' and the 'grommet size' that you ordered for your PR20? I'm trying to match one that is very specific, but so far can only find it in UK, which I find shipping would probably be very costly, and take too long to get to me, so I'm trying to piece one together in USA.

IF not, is there anyone else around that is using one, or a similar one, can you please let me know here, or PM me with details?

Has anyone used a KHAMPA (woven golf screen) net? They are on eBay for around $200.

Has anyone used All Sport Systems - another eBay listing company (with Golf Simulator screens - also around $200).

Here is what I am finding at this point (October 2020). The West Coast Netting PR20 Net runs about $450 for my needs (10'x8', or similar size). That's quite a bit more than I've found other, similar nets, but they don't seem to have the same size, such as this one at: Net World Sports, seems to be the closest I can come, but the grommets (eyelets) are 3' apart, when I need them more like 1' to 2' apart?

              Thanks in advance,
              -Brett

Solstice72 I have the Carls Premium screen and it shows wear in my opinion faster than it should. This is my first screen so I honestly cant say what is normal or not. I have attached an image of the impact area over a 4 to 5 month period. The screen gives off a fuzzy image quality that is not bad but it is definitely not as sharp as I had hoped. I orderd a Par2pro SQ screen and should be here next week. This will allow me to compare 2 premium screens to each other and see if there is much difference. One thing about Par2pro is they discount every screen purchase after original screen purchase for replacements which is big for me as much as I use the SIM room.

Hah - I saw somewhere, I think Wormburner said 165 ball speed. Dechambeau is at 205-210 ball speed.

Wow Wormburner - that's a big no for me, if Carl's Premium can do that in 4-5 months! Please let us know how the Par2Pro SQ screen does in comparison, after another 4-5 months on it. At this point, I'm going to stick with Archery netting for my screen, as I've heard it lasts forever, have you considered using that in front of your premium screens? That's another option.

I am still around. My west coast net is going strong, what’s the question?

I went with black, web bound #2 grommets. Not all archery netting is the same it seems. West coast’s knitting seems reasonably tight.

Maybe see if hybridme can ship you the one they recommend from the uk? I know he shipped hitting strips to guys before.

thanks Stingreye exactly what I needed, good to know, how far apart are your #2 grommets spaced ? I will email Phil again at hybrid. I asked him before and cost was reasonable, the only worry I have at this point is it could be tied up in shipping for months the way the postal services are now!

We have the Par2Pro SQ Screen and have been bashing balls into it since Mid April of this year. Picture quality is great, no wear that I can detect and the bounce back is minimal to non-existent. We are very pleased with it - Highly recommended.

We do (as a side note) keep the sim room golf balls quite fresh. Any scuffing or defect gets them relegated to the shag bag. I think using scuffed (worse scratched) or aging golf balls in the sim is a major source of some premature wear (in some cases anyways...). My two cents.

Here is a new photo I took this weekend which is 2 months newer than old photo. I only use new balls that have never seen the the light of day outside so not sure why this screen shows so much discoloration. The screen also shows some sag in material over time, I assume this is due to stretching from ball impact.

I started using my Carl's preferred impact screen this week and it already has 2 large depressions from ball impacts.

I used to put 2 35lb dumbbells at the bottom of carls screen when I was not using to get the impressions out but over time that stopped working. I am using par2pro SQ screen now and much better so far. I will say the bounce back is more now but it does not bother me.

Possible transfer from your clubs (dirt in grooves etc.)? I am religious about cleaning the clubs before they head to the sim.

I have a set of clubs dedicated to the SIM room only so they are clean year around!

My screen looked very similar to this, i have the direct from mill screen backed up by a spectrum screen and then a net behind that. I just rotated my screen this weekend. This screen was from the second batch (first one with the thicker material) so it's over 2.5 years old now.

I installed this screen at the end of April. Very little time being used but I do use it 5 times per week for 20 to 30 minutes per session.
                Working...
