  • New Games Room

    Hi Guys

My Architect has just finished the concept floor plan for my Games Room.
15' 8"W x 26' 2" L . These are internal dimensions. I have plenty of height to swing, but the wall height for the screen unknown as of yet, I suspect will be at least 10 feet.

I know many of you have close to this dimension. So I just want to confirm a few details with those with the experience.
This is what I had in mind or what I am still pondering.

    1. Distance of Screen to back wall, 18 inches?
    2. Enclosure or no enclosure?
    3. Angle Iron or EMT to secure the screen?
    4. Screen dimension Width and Height for best pic with TGC and JNPG, but also with consideration to the Room dimension?
    5. To have a sub floor, if so what height? 4"
    6. Hitting distance from Screen? 10 feet
    7. Do I need side Protection at this distance? If so curtains or wall Padding?
    8. Do I need roof protection at this height. If so baffles, roof padding or net?
    9. Screen Type?
    10. Hitting mat preference. TS, FB, CC Elite, Other
    11. Putting surface?
    12. How noisey. Sound proofing?
    13. Backstop after screen. Needed or not needed?

    FYI,

It will be a combo room and I will have seating at the other end of the room.

I have read many posts and seen some great pictures, information is great but then it can be hard to make a decision??

    Yes or no, pass.

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards Indodom.

I'll give my opinion on your questions. My room is about 14'x24' with 10' ceilings, so it is pretty similar.

    1. 12" should be fine, but it depends on your screen and how tight it is and if you have anything behind the screen.
    2. No enclosure
    3. Angle iron from wall to wall
    4. Screen would be wall to wall and to the ceiling. You'll lose about 4-6" on each side for attachment to the angle iron
    5. I had existing carpet, so I just shimmed the carpet around my hitting mat and cut it into the carpet. I would do 2x4's covered with plywood and cover the entire floor with putting turf and put holes in.
6.7-12' from the screen, but 10' is a good number
    7. No side protection needed
    8. 3-4 ft of ceiling protection if you are flopping LW's. I applied a closed cell foam pad to my ceiling with command strip velcro
    9. Dbgolf's straight from the mill
    10. I have CC Elite. It definitely punishes fat shots. I would just insert a hitting strip. It sounds like TS is the way to go.
    11. You definitely want a quality turf, but I can't help with that.
    12. Probably depends on where it's located, but I would say some insulation in the walls and ceiling would be adequate.
    13. Depends on the screen. I use a very inexpensive net from West Coast Netting, but probably don't really need it.

      I'll give this a shot.

      1. I think 18 inches is plenty. Some guys have gotten it closer than that but with your room size I don't think 6 inches will hurt.
      2. Depends on the skill of the golfers. IMO no enclosure gives a cleaner look. You can pad the walls and ceiling near the screen with carpet tile or foam or add baffles to the ceiling.
      3. I think this is just personal preference. I have an EMT frame. I'm finishing out a room and will try slotted angle in the next build.
      4. Bigger is better. 15 x 10.
      5. I don't have a subfloor currently my hitting mat lays on top of the articial turf. In the upgrade I am planning a subfloor to have the hitting mat even with the rest of area. I'm looking at 2".
      6. Anywhere from 8 to 12 feet. 10 seems to be the best distance.
      7. See #2
      8. I would definitely add ceiling protection. I think side netting is optional. Again depending on skill level.
      9. Carl's or Par2Pro SQ. If you can wait get on the direct from mill list.
      10. I started out with CCE. After about 6 months I started having shoulder pain. Saw on here other guys say wrist and elbow pain as well. Just bought a DivotAction insert.
      11. I think the most aesthetically pleasing is having the area cover in Synlawn or similar turf with your hitting mat sunk in. That way you have a flat putt that rolls true. Could be expensive. I have a Birdie Ball putting mat I use for practice but not during Simulation rounds. Too much of a pain to move the Skytrak or in your case GC2.
      12. There are different post on here discussing this. The ball hitting the screen is the sound that travels most. I am looking into Roxul insulation. You can also use acoustic foam or carpet.
      13. I see some guys recommend used netting behind the screen or mattress toppers. I personally don't use anything. Just have my Carl's Preferred hanging.

Just my opinions and experience. I'm sure other people will jump in and say what they did or think.

      Good Luck and Enjoy!

        1. 12" is plenty and others have even less. No sense in taking up space that's not needed.
        2. no enclosure
        3. Angle Iron
        4. Go 16:9 or 16:10 ratio and figure out what that would be for a 15' wide image. You may end up being slightly less than 15" though when you put up trim on the side.
        5. Most inserts are around 2" so anything above that should be fine, also depends if you want to add putting as you need to account for the depth of the cups.
        6. 10 feet works for most people
        7. Do I need side Protection at this distance? Probably not, i hit from about 9-10 feet and don't have nearly the screen width you would have and i have yet to hit a shank into my side protection.
        8. Do I need roof protection at this height. Better to have it than not, baffles are easy to do and look nice.
        9. Screen Type? Direct from the mill if you can wait, pricing is very good and the quality is great.
        10. Hitting mat preference. FB is easiest on body followed by Magstrike, DA, TS and then CCE.
        11. Putting surface? No idea
        12. How noisey. Sound proofing? My setup is in the garage, but since you are in the planning stages having more won't hurt.
        13. Backstop after screen. I've always used a net to back it up and it works, now I have a net, old impact screen and then the new screen.

Your room is similar to mine so I'll give my input as well.

          1. Mine is 8 inches with memory foam between screen and wall.
          2. No enclosure but something on walls and ceiling. I have carpet tile
          3. In a room that size angle iron on walls
          4. 16x10 is perfect in the sim. Mine is the same.
          5. I put a 5x10 CCE mat and used DriCore sub floor to make the putting carpet the same height
          6. 10 feet
          7. See 2
          8. See 2
          9. Get something quiet like the new par2pro one. You'll be glad you did. I test screens. Trust me. Protee is quiet too
          10. CCE is perfect to me. I have had surgery twice on my right shoulder and broke my left arm twice
          11. Any top quality one. Mine is the Southwest
          12. Don't bother
          13. Not needed

Thanks guys, kind of getting consensus on most of the points which makes the job of making a decision a lot easier. Love the photos @mthunt.
