Spray On Impact Screen Protection

Hi Guys,

I am about to receive my first impact screen from dbgolf72 (the Direct from the Mill - Thank you Daniel).

I read about some balls and dirt leaving marks on the impact screen over time and curious if Daniel or anyone has ever tried a spray on fabric protectant like 3M or whatever. They will make it easier to clean but not sure it it will effect the picture or performance in any way.

Maybe some experimentation is due!

I haven’t tried a cleaner. But I do know the ink on the golf balls comes off on the screen. You will see little dull gray like marks on the screen from the ink. I used red Truvis balls and there is pink all over my screen. I’m getting a new one soon and I will only use blank golf balls. Blanks have no ink on them at all. Amazon has Nitro blanks pretty cheap. Premium balls don’t last long anyways in a sim room.

I'd be much more concerned about using quality balls that give me real spin/performance numbers that replicate what I play with in real life. If you aren't using a real LM that actually measures spin and launch, it might not be a huge deal, but I'd take accuracy over small marks on the screen any day.

Yea

I run a league out of my showroom. We would be replacing balls every week if they are premiums. Urethane balls are great for the course but not for repeated use as the cover wears and cracks quickly.

Thank you for the comments. They are exactly why I think finding a way to protect the screen (if possible) would be very beneficial.

Seems Callaway Truvis balls work great with the SkyTrak, which relies on logos and marks in order to compare the changes in 2 photos for its calculations.

So I can only imagine the “blank” balls would not read and if any did it would not be accurate.

Maybe a combination of some type of spray on fabric screen protection and balls markings only inside the dimples would work.

Or possibly spraying clear protectant on the balls (constantly?).

Guess we have some experimentation to do. Lol

I still think SkyGolf or a 3rd party is sitting on a nice little niche to market durable, sim and impact screen friendly balls to replicate popular on course versions.

I am sure every SkyTrak owner on here would be willing to pay a few $ in order to decrease no reads, decrease screen damage and discoloration/staining or increase ball longevity. Let alone all 3!

it would be super simple for the current manufactures to simple tweak their current printing/cover a little on their most popular ball(s).

Wouldn’t be my first original product I designed, manufactured and successfuly sold hundreds of thousands before everyone else copied it and whored it out. Lol

I'm game for trying the spray guard - I just ordered the Scotchgard Fabric and Upholstery Protector and will be able to test it later next month

Theoretically a whole bunch of things could be possible. Off the top of my head these are the main things I am thinking the Spray Protector applied to the screen may or may not cause the following:

- Projector Image Quality (Better or Worse - Easier/Quickest test to do)
- Flaking Off (I would guess this would happen sooner then later?)
- Stiffening of the Fibers resulting in more Denting and/or Premature Wear/Failure
(This one may take a while and benefit from someone being very accurate and hitting the same amount of balls into the same small area on a coated section and uncoated section, ideally close together so they are under the same tension, etc)

I wish I had ordered another smaller "test screen" and tried it. I would put a piece of blue painter tape and have a crisp line down middle of half sprayed/coated and the other half not and look for the above.

Will certainly be very interesting.

How did the spray go? Was thinking of doing it due to fact it is in garage and dust, dirt etc... plus normal wear and tear.
