I have the Carl's Premium screen with a sports net hung behind it as well as a 2" thick memory foam mattress topper (topper just covers a generous impact area... no need for full screen). Screen is mounted to angle iron on walls & ceiling, and free floats on bottom. Balls drop straight down.

jryan I'm guessing a little, since a lot of it is clearly the quality of the Carl's product, but I will say yes, they do help. Typically I have only one ball indentation after a hit, and as soon as there is another hit the first is erased.. If I want a clear screen for watching movies, I just brush a hand over the ball dimple and presto, it's gone

Great minds think alike! It’s amazing how little space behind the screen is needed with the right setup & materials.

I'm just starting my first build and asked Carl's customer service about this. They said no net is required and that having one may actually negatively affect performance.
That doesn't make sense to me, but has anyone had any trouble with using a net?

With net = Thoroughly satisfied, perfect performance, zero bounce back. 'nuff said. <mic drop>
<pick up mic> plus if you think about it, makes sense that their customer service would know and stand by their product on its own merits. no problem with that. Also makes sense that since they can't control what net anyone would use they wouldn't want any liability for said. Anyway, with net works great and my screen is in great shape.

Hey Walb0034,
You will probably get different responses but the whole back dampening thing was a royal pain and a learning curve on my end. But here are my lessons...
As mentioned above, the Carls Premium is fantastic. It takes 165mph+ ball impacts with ease with no permanent damage. You may have an impression but the shot smooths out with next shot or pass your hand over the dent and it magically disappears.
Please do not place a moving pad blanket behind to dampen the ball. This was a huge mistake. After my first golf party ( Day 1 with the set up) my screen was filthy with ball marks everywhere. My first thought was my buddies didn’t do a good job cleaning their clubs. Later the next day I realized that the marks were from the tiny fibers from the blanket that shed into the white screen( It was basically like a fine dark powder). When i removed the blanket it was shredded to pieces with dozens of holes through it. Those dark marks on my screen are still there today which was a heartbreak after day one.
Next step was the Memory foam topper ( picked one up at target). Speaking of Target you will only need the foam to take the impacts in the middle to lower part of your screen. I used 4 3ft bungees that I looped through the memory foam( poked them through the foam and hung from the EMT).
2 mistakes:
1) the foam ripped from the bungees after a few days bc of the weight of the foam
2) The weight caused the upper EMT to sag which sagged the screen.
Fix:
1)I got a few carpet tac strips and placed them on each side of the foam and screwed them together( this kept the stress from the bungees distributed so that the foam will not rip.) I moved pretty quickly on this process and it cause a few of the strips to crack( I would recommend pilot drill a hole first )
2) To counter the weight of the foam hanging on the impact screen, I anchored in 2 hooks to the ceiling and attached tie-downs( green tie-downs in the picture). I ratchet those somewhat tight to straighten the top EMT of the impact screen.
I hope this helps. Good Luck3 Photos

Thanks for this awesome writeup Golf y’all I think I'll do the exact same thing. The carpet tack strips is a great idea. How are those holding up? anyone else come up with a decent way to hang a mattress topper?

I'm in the same boat. I read all this and thought 'bigger is better' but I'm now trying to wrangle this beast. I bought a premium finished 18x10 and mounted 6 inches from wall. I hit some chip 5 irons to test and it bounced back hard. I will post some pictures in my build thread. I think I am at the edge of the weight the brackets and S hooks can support so I'm nervous about adding some stuff behind it. I have a heavy black impact net that looks like the archery netting or a 10x20 cage net. I really really don't want to remount all of the brackets. Should I test adding stuff behind or just remount it?

I have a Carl's premium 16x9 net with their 5ft enclosure cage installed in front of a cement wall. I am about 6-8 inches from the wall and i have Zero bounce back with nothing behind screen.
