  • new build - Ideal dimensions?

I have been using a 10X10x10 in a Garage set up, which whilst great has the usual restrictions of projection image size filling the screen due to width, as well as not really being able to use woods unless I want to hit off centre.

I am now planning a new build summer house which will include a dedicated games area, and of course a Golf set up with GC3/ projector etc...

I am thinking that will also use for Gaming and Movies ( although May also consider a motorised drop down dedicated screen in front of the impact screen if image is better)

So I will have a number of questions, but first ones are:

    1) assume 10ft is ideal height ideal; would 18ft be the optimal width for a 16:9 typical projection and wanting to fill screen?

    2) how far back would you then hit in order to get best immersive experience ( currently hit 9ft back in my 10x10x10)

    3) for those using for movies/tv as well, do you fill screen or project more to top of screen (wondering if would look strange watching movies from the floor, and below eye level... but maybe get used to it.... if not may go for even wider screen)

    4) anyone had experience with home theatre speakers working in such a set up as would assume sound will get muffled behind screen.... and putting speakers in front could risk damage when playing golf.

    5) anyone used hitting screen for movies as well as dedicated projection screen.... and is there a major difference? (Would think that centre gets marked.... but also on large widths does the screen lose tension more than a say 10x10?)

    6) majority of hits will ( or at least should be) centred.. is there a workaround anyone has used to get more life out of the screen... eg: (I) buying extra width and periodically shifting screen horizontally , (II)having a drop down strip of material ( say 3ft wide) in centre, (iii) other??

Appreciate all and any advice, and will for sure post up details of project as it takes shape and progresses..

    Some thoughts:

1/ 10 feet height is a minimum. Ideal, in my view would be closer to 12 feet high - we're talking about the space, not the impact screen.

2/ The further back you go, the less "immersive" it gets. Hitting 10 feet from the screen is pretty well the standard for golf sims.

BTW the notion of an "immersive experience" doesn't hold up to scrutiny from a psychological perspective. Your field of view is quite narrow, and what registers as important is that that is directly in the center of your field of view. Realistically we should call a spade a spade and clarify that the 16:9 screen is meant to impress your buddies or for movies.

4/ Impact screens in front of speakers do not affect the sound.

5/ Impact screens are not the best solution for "home theater" use.

    Hope this helps.

I’m 6’1” and my ceiling is 10 feet. It seems like way more than necessary. I don’t think I could hit a 12 foot ceiling with driver if i jumped and tried to hit it.

I'm 6'4" and 10 feet is so comfortable with driver. I bet I don't come within 12" of it.

Anything more is just gravy. The more open it feels, the less psychological restrictions though I suppose.

          Thanks for feedback so far.

Re 1) I have a tall mate (6.3) around in a couple of weeks so will test for him ( with an old driver to see how close he gets to top)

Hopefully 10ft is ok as could get expensive building a 12ft tall room...

Re 4) I would have thought the sound would be muffled behind a screen.... but will do some testing.... ultimately more important if using for movies as well... so may need to get creative and have easily removable speaker connections etc...

          Cheers

I agree with aja on his points but find that 10' ceiling is more than enough. When calculating projected area on the screen, remember to include the mounting area around the screen that you will likely want to cover up. The 16:9 area should be the inside dimensions.

To confirm, I have 5.1 surround sound setup including center speaker and two front speakers behind the screen and I have not noticed any issues with sound. I'm not an audiophile, but I would notice crappy sound, and it is just not an issue. Just ensure that you have enough space between the screen and the wall that the speakers are mounted on, so that when a ball hits the screen at the point where a speaker is mounted behind it, it does not damage the speaker.

              Thanks for feedback

I have a 10 x 10 at moment, but other than filling a 16x9 or 16x 10 screen - is there a minimum width that is good for al heights of players using woods.

.... in other words, if I only need 13 foot rather than 16 foot to ensure adequate room to play without restriction.

Same here. 6’4” and no issues with my 10 foot ceiling.

Any thought on the ideal width, to allow Drivers for Left & Righties...?

My room is 17’7” wide, plenty of room for both and practice swings too.

Thanks - looks like 16-18 foot is the sweet spot.
