  • Distance from screen

Can someone point me in direction of a post discussing the distance that you should ideally leave between hitting mat and enclosure screen?

Just setting up my golfbays enclosure and placing my mat

In a previous thread, most people were between 9-10', some more some less. I don't remember the title or subforum where it was posted. There is no "ideal" as available space is different for everyone as well as screen size consideration, projector placement, etc.

Im approximately 7-7.5 feet, hitting into screen 10 wide by 8 feet high. Any further away I would not feel comfortable hitting wedges full out. If your screen is taller perhaps 9 feet away would be the optimal. My suggestion is to get a few "almost golf balls" and hit some full lob or 56 degree wedges and see where you feel comfortable. good luck

Curious... What does it feel like hitting driver into the screen from 7-7.5 feet away? Can you swing freely?

I agree... Im around the 7ft mark as well. My 60* wedge is dangerous even at that distance with a 10ft screen. I'm in the process of putting up a knockdown curtain/baffle and side netting for mine purely because of shots that ride up my impact netting.

Exactly "skeetshooter". I will not hit full all-out 56-60 wedges because as you said they ride up the screen and have such spin they propel up into the air and come back to me, come close to my projector, or over my head. Never knew how some of these guys are hitting wedges in their sims, especially after seeing their setups

Any suggestions on how to do the knockdown curtain? Also how far you think it should extend from the screen?

I really don't know the answer to that yet. I plan on using some left over sportscreen material I have and securing it at an angle from the top of the sport screen roller at roughly a 45* angle out towards me. I'm sure It won't work first try out, but I'll report back when I get it secured and tested.

Here's some things to think about. The closer to the screen you play the more loose you will likely want your screen to reduce bounce back. If you have an 8 ft high screen and hit 10 ft away, a wedge shot with a launch angle of 45 degrees will want to hit 2 ft above the top of the screen. If you are 7 ft away from the same screen and hit the same wedge shot, the ball will want to hit 1 ft below the top of the screen. So, it depends a great deal on what your setup is.

I stand 10 ft from the screen, but have a full cage setup with netting all around to help prevent the ceiling and/or walls from ball strikes.

                Similar, but different question....

I'm hitting into a NetReturn now, typical SkyTrak/flat screen set up. Thinking about hanging a screen in front of it and moving to a projector. Love the dead drop with slight roll back return of the NetReturn. However, starting ball placement is 4'' to 4'6" from the face to the frame due to the size of the room--I can just barely squeeze the driver in. I realize I could pad the wall/hang a screen and eliminate the NetReturn, but I'm looking for easier options.

Which screen works best for such a close-in launch point? Frankly, I'd just hang a white sheet in front of the NetReturn, but I'm guessing it would shred pretty quickly.

                Thanks!

I take it you want to hang the screen loosely? The image will not be great. If you want to try it, Ebay has some low cost screens that will last fairly good if hung loosely. Search for this to get an example.

I figured that the height of your screen is the max distance that you want to be away from the screen. i.e. 8 ft talk screen then 8 ft away. 9 ft tall screen then 9 ft away. This gives you a 45 degree angle which should catch lob wedges at the very top of your screen.

I have an 8 ft tall screen. 8’4” to be exact. I would have positioned my hitting area 8’4” away from the screen, however, I got the Carl’s enclosure with the 5 foot side and ceiling. Now if I swing driver 8’4” from the screen my follow through hits the ceiling party of the enclosure. So I had to place the hitting area 10’ away. Now my 54 degree full swing will launch the ball just over the screen. A calculation that I failed to realize before I started building it. BUT I can swing away with driver which is a must. Driver and partial wedges are the most important to me.

Hey what's the solution here if you had to redo it. I'm in the same situation. I have an 8'10 height restriction with my enclosure. Due to a bulkhead but I have 10.5 foot ceiling heights. I'm ordering what I should do to not hit the cross bar or ceiling of the enclosure. And yet he around 8-9 feet from the screen. I'm also worried about shanks etc. so I want Depth.
