  • DIY Impact Screen Enclosure build guide - about $670 for a 16x9 enclosure with screen

Since I get asked about this a lot, I wrote up a DIY Impact Screen Enclosure build guide today with links to materials:

Hope it helps someone, and I welcome any feedback or questions you may have.

Hi Ron, thanks for taking the time to do this. I had planned on buying a net to use but for the same price I think I’ll do this for when I’ll eventually want a projector. I have a question why you use clips and bungee cords on the sides versus tube clips.

It’s easier to adjust tension on the sides with bungees and tarp clips rather than tube clips. If you do want the screen to go full width, you can buy screen with extra width, then wrap it around side poles and use tarp clips and long bungees behind screen going from side to side.

Thanks, that makes sense. I'm looking for a way to utilize your design that I can tear down and store when not in use since it is going in my garage.

I’ve got another question for you. I’ve never done anything with projectors. I plan on a ceiling mount project onto a 8.5x15x3 enclosure following your design. Will I have to compensate with the projector height so the screen hood doesn’t interfere with the image?

The top surface of the projector housing (really the bottom, since it will be flipped upside-down) should be the same height as the top edge of your screen to avoid any necessary keystone adjustments or shadows from the top of the enclosure.

This is great, thanks for sharing! I'm looking to try to imitate your example, but I have a couple questions for you.
              1. If you buy the extra 4-5' of screen material in your "pro tip," so that you have slack to rotate the hitting area, how do you attach the extra material to the side? I think you said the extra material wraps around the side pole and gets bungied...but I'm not understanding...do wrap it around the right pole, for example, and then have like 10' bungies attaching back to the far (left) side?
              2. "To extend the life of your screen, consider getting some 1" nylon sport netting from eBay and hanging it behind the screen, right up against it, to help absorb impact." So this is just to stabilize the projection screen material so it doesn't "give" as much? How are you attaching it behind the screen...does it also go under the same tube clips on the top and bottom that are holding the projection screen?
              3. do you have any pictures on how you attached the side netting to the screen (to cover the 3-4" gap on the sides)? I'm having a hard time picturing what you are doing.

              Thanks so much!

So I’ve got my frame sized. I do think I’m going to add some cross members for support. My dimensions are 8.5x15x3. Hoping that wrapping the pipes in foam will keep me from catch a rocket coming back at me.... 90% error right???

                  1. Yes
                  2. I attached my sport netting to top bar with some 6” alligator clips - tube clips don’t have enough give in them for that thickness.
                  3. No, I didn’t bother doing that.

How did you attach the commando cloth to the top and sides? Did you just let it hang? I doubled my order of commando cloth because I’m planning to to do the normal 4’ or so around the top and sides but I’m also going to try to attach the extra with eye bolts in the ceiling so it can be folded back when just watching movies.

What are tube clips? All I find with this search is different hose clamps and such. Thanks!

Do you have another source for the tube clips? Amazon is estimating they are over a month out for estimated delivery. Thanks for the detailed write up!

Several hits on this Amazon search, but I don't have experience with any other than the ones I posted:

                              These look very close:
