  • Screen Backing

I know this has been covered a million times, but I have a few questions specifically about either the par2pro SQ screen or the Carl's premium screen. Does anybody with either of these screens feel that a dark backing adds anything visually to the picture on the screen or is it used only for adding longevity to the screen and reducing bounce back? I don't have any experience with the Carl's premium, but my brother has the par2pro screen set up at his house with no backing and we've never had an issue with bounce back. I haven't been there in a while and haven't had a chance to check how much light bleeds through the screen so I don't know if a blackout material behind would provide any benefit.

The second question is, if a blackout material is used, what is something that people have had success with? I know there is talk about moving blankets, but I've seen some say that they shred pretty easily and some will transfer the dye to the back of the screen and mark it. If there is no visual benefit, then I guess hanging memory foam would work best. I was thinking possibly heavy blackout curtains? I'm not sure if they would transfer any dye to the screen, but they work well as side barriers and would definitely cut out any light bleeding through. I'm just putting my shopping list together for my upcoming build and I'm debating whether or not to use any backing at all. I'd love to hear what you guys specifically are using for either of these screens. Thanks.

I don't know about the light bleed but here is what I used for the material and it worked really well. I bought the raw material and did the grommets myself.

Buy Large Curtain Grommets Size #12/12L (1-9/16") from GoldStar Tool, your one-stop shop for all things sewing and craft. $4.99 Shipping In The U.S.

That's just what I was looking for, thanks. Out of curiosity, what screen do you have?

No screen yet. I’m still working out the mounting position of the screen and making some curtain tracks. I will be purchasing from Ron at gunghogolf.com. Guy is freaking awesome.

I have a Carl's Golf Premium screen and I started with nothing behind it. The bounce back was pretty severe if you bladed a ball so I un-bungeed the bottom third of the screen and it helped tremendously. Since my sim is next to my daughter's bedroom, I added moving blankets from Harbor Freight ($4.99 each https://www.harborfreight.com/40-inc...ket-47262.html) and it definitely helps deaden the screen and reduces noise. I just noticed tonight, however, that I am blasting holes in the blankets. My next purchase will be a heavy vinyl or canvas tarp from Harbor Freight as they're the cheapest. If you need a grommet kit, they have those too for a whopping $4.49 (https://www.harborfreight.com/12-in-...-pc-63237.html).

As for the color of the blankets hanging behind the screen, I did not see any bleeding of color, but I did have a mesh tarp between the screen and the moving blankets and I think it was roughing up the screen so I removed it and will replace it with a smooth textured material.

I would actually like to try a memory foam mattress, but I'm not sure if they can be hung or have to be mounted. Seems like they would tear if you punched holes for mounting straps or bungees. If anyone has done that, I would love to hear what works.

I do not have anything behind my Par2Pro SQ screen. In fact, they recommend against it IIRC. No bounce back to speak of and the sound is quite manageable - driver is way louder than ball hitting screen. I also do not see any light bleed through but I may not fully understand what you are trying to manage. Projector makes more if a difference IMO than any bleed-through but that is just my two cents.

I don't have either of those screens but putting some material behind the screen can help if you're getting some bleed through. When I first hung my screen I looked at the wall behind it and could see a lot of the image bleeding through. I hung like 4 or 5 white blankets and sheets behind the screen and now there is not any image bleeding through to the wall behind. I noticed that it improved the image a little bit. Also helped with the bounce back.

A lot of people seem to go for black. My reasoning for using white was that the screen is white, so shouldn't anything you use to capture bleed-through also be white? In other words, if black was the way to go than shouldn't we all be using black screens? I don't know. I've heard arguments for both black and white.

I have the carl's premium. I hung blackout curtains behind the screen about 6" away from it. The image is definitely better because the curtains stop the light from bleeding through.

So I have a couple of things to decide. First, whether to get the Carl's premium or par2pro SQ screen and second, whether or not to put a backing on it. I don't think with either of those screens the backing will make any appreciable difference in picture quality so the only question is whether or not it will help with the longevity of the screen. I'm getting a 16'x9' screen and will be hitting from 10' away so I'm not too worried about bounce back. If anything I might get that commando cloth linked above or duck canvas. As to the question above about black screens vs white, I think black would be way better according to this video, but of course there are no golf impact screens that are even close to this.
