  • Ideas for Mounting Impact Screen to the Wall

    Hi all,

I'm nearing the time to finalize the plans for my garage sim. I don't need the impact screen to fold up or retract or anything and will be building it out of 1" EMT and fittings from tarps.com. It is just a screen, not an enclosure, as I'll be relying on heavy duty curtains/netting for the sides and top. All of that being said, does anyone have experience and recommendations on how to secure it to the wall and/or ceiling (ceiling height is 11' so I'm leaning wall as it's an 8x10.5 screen). I've seen several builds here and elsewhere that used heavy duty shelving brackets and pillow block bearings, which intrigues me, but I'm not sure on what size of the bearings would be needed. All ideas welcome. Thanks!

we have a 14" deep screen frame . we can make out of 1" EMT. its just sits up against the wall. comes with back panel and the screen is same size as frame. Real popular with garages and tight spaces . Plus its pulled tight on all 4 sides and is adjustable . We can make 10.5 x 8 . See link

I won't knock the hustle, but I have the materials to make the frame already and am not interested in any depth beyond mounting it directly to the ceiling/wall 12-14" away.

You don’t need pillow block bearing if you don’t want it to retract. That would be an expensive way to go. If you are set on it I bought some from northern tool and the diameter of the bore should be bigger than the outer diameter of the emt. If you have 1” EMT then get 1.25 inch bearings

My screen is mounted to the wall. I used 4 footpads from tarps.com to attach to the wall and floor. I then used 2-3 way connectors for the top bar. One piece of emt goes towards the wall, one piece goes down to the floor and the other piece is the top bar. I do not have anything across the bottom. It basically created an upside down U shape. My screen is about 10-12" off the wall.

Nice, that's similar to one route I thought of going. I got 3-way connectors for the 4 corners just in case, and ordered some foot pads as well to connect to the wall. Any issues with lack of tension or otherwise by not having a bottom bar? Are the top footpads mounted directly to studs/the wall? I was considering some form of shock absorption between the wall and those footpads to decrease noise.

ChiGolf22 the only issue is some slight waviness with no tension on the bottom. I would've liked to have have folded over the bottom of the screen and sewn a pocket to run some bungee cord through and tie it to the upright poles on the sides. I don't think there is a need for shock absorption on the poles, the screen does it all. My screen is attached to the poles via tarp clips and adjustable ball bungees.
