  • Bare Minimum Height for Screen and Enclosure?

I still have questions on Enclosure and Screen Height. Here's why, I'm planning to install in a new addition/great room in my house which will have cathedral ceilings - rafter built. What this means is that at the outside wall where I plan on installing the screen/enclosure, that wall starts at 8' and slopes UP to 12' (1 foot of rise for every 3 feet of length to the room).

Can someone chime in on the enclosure height(s) required, and what they have - as a minimum? Can I get away with 8'6", or 9' as a maximum height (if I chose 9' - that means I would have to install my screen/enclosure 3' away from the outside wall. Will that be a problem?

I'm asking because I've signed up for unlimited golf at a local Sim/Bar. I hit there again last night - and noticed that with sand wedges/wedges the ball can fly pretty high up the screen/enclosure - so I wonder how others are trapping the ball when lofted clubs are used - and what the bare minimum height would be?

    Thanks,
    -Brett

The hight where you swing is crucial. The hight of the screen isn't. Just make sure you protect the ceiling above the screen. You can go 8 feet if you don't mind balls hitting above the screen on short wedges. It's really not a big deal.

I just moved my set up to my summer home. My height is 8' 10" no problem as I'm 5'10. My 6' 9" son-in-law can only hit chip shots. My problem was I built the enclosure 10 wide. It works, but after having a 12 wide enclosure it feels cramped. My clearance is close on the left side for the driver and the projector is a little low. I'm going to change from a pipe and net cage to a frame and carpet set up. I'm doing a little research on the site to get it right. I'm going to use carpeted panels on the ceiling. My projector sets 9'6" from the center of the screen it hangs at 8' 5" over my head. It works fine for me, but for guests I have to do something different . Right now I do not have anything on the ceiling. I hit a bunch of wedge shots yesterday and it is less than ideal.

A wood frame and carpet enclosure will allow me to go 12 wide and get rid of the netting. For this set up I turned my 12X10 net sideways. This is a temporary set up.

Mthunt - can you explain more about the balls hitting the ceiling? Do you have some way to protect your ceiling, etc? Mazenblue - since I can come in 3' and have 9' on ceiling, I'm guessing that will be fine?

How tall are you? I'm 5 10 and I have clearance at 8' 10. What is the width/depth of the enclosure? Have you looked at Wigalos post Constructing an enclosure?

Have a look in Enclosures and Screens for "Ceiling Protection" and "ProTee Sim Room". I'm very happy with my solution.

Maze I'm 5'11 the width will be: 11'6"' max, but may be 11', the depth will be 14' (min, but I do have 3' to 4' behind that, would prefer not to use). So you see, I'm cramped here. I just spoke to the builder today who's talking about giving me 9' ceilings to start, and vaulting those to 12', instead of starting at 8' and vaulting to 12', that should make quite a difference, as my screen height minimum would go from 8' to 9'.

I'm just worried about popping up sand wedges into the ceiling - does that happen for you?

Thanks aja - I found a lot there: ceiling baffles, etc... a lot of posts/pics by you too. I'll check back in here as I get closer to my build as I'll likely have a lot of questions on setup of the enclosure/screen.

9' h is fine you can use netting or some blackout material on the ceiling and keep it 8" or more down - the ball speed is lower with a wedge and with the angle it will bounce off the net and into the screen. My hitting area is at 14' from the screen 10' h and I have netting - I don't hit the netting that often but my highest loft is 58 and my brother uses a 60 and 62 and hits the netting more often.

I don't have anything on the ceiling yet. I just put it up here. I'm going to put some carpeted panels up. Yes I do hit the ceiling with my 60 wedge. I'm considering moving mine into a room. It is 15.5 deep and 12 wide the ceiling is 8' 10" I have to keep it at 10 wide if I move it due to an overhang.

Some people put neting up top. Some people fashion a carpet system. Memory foam and fabric works. Put plywood. You'll be fine.

Thanks guys (Maze, MThunt, MXWoodman). MXWoodman, 14' from the screen, I only have about 14' maximum, for everything, so I was figuring 6-7 feet to the screen, maybe 10' if I have to push it, and 4' behind me - will that work? I figure the closer in to the screen I get - the less ceiling height I need - correct?

I talked to a framer again today that may be building my addition - he now has me convinced that a TRAY ceiling would save on energy and be more effecient, what this means though is that I will have 2' behind to the wall where the screen is setup that will only be 8' in height, after that it goes straight up at a 90 degree angle to 10'. So, I have 10' ceiling where I can swing, but the outside wall that I am hitting toward where the net/screen will be setup is only 8' high until you get to 2' out from the wall.

Will this work with some baffles or defleectors- or am I going to have to move the entire net/enclosure 2' closer to me so that wedges do not wipe out the plaster board there?

I can't swing with a wall 4 feet behind the ball. Seems small.

Hmm... Well there really is no wall back there, I was just hoping I could use that space for something else. What happens is that at about 16'-17' my room size narrows down to about 10' but the room goes back another 11' to 25' total....

I'll scan in a drawing tomorrow and you will see.
