Reduce Dent

Hi,

I'm rebuilding my golf simulator room. Last time, I used the premium screen from Carl's golf, but I got a large dent in one area of the screen where I repeatedly hit it. This time, I'm using the SigPro premium. My question is should I put more tension or less tension on the screen to reduce the potential for a dent? I understand I'll have to adjust to ensure no bounce back issues, but was not sure if more or less tension would help reduce dents on the new screen. Thanks for the help!

I’d assume less tension would be less likely to form a dent, for the same reason it’s also less likely to come back and hit you in the face. Just my impression, though

What’s better long term screen performance…. Tighter screen with some kind of weighting behind it to deaden the blow, or just a loose screen?

Not a guru, but I would suggest enough tension to keep the ripples out of the screen, but then also use some kind of backing on the screen, canvas tarp, an old screen, archery netting, etc.

I'm using an old screen behind my hitting screen, there's enough tension on the hitting screen that without backing and using driver up to 6 iron the balls exhibit a couple of feet of rebound ( but they are not coming at a speed that would injure anyone), the backup screen is also tensioned, though to a lesser degree. Between the 2 the rebound is pretty low.

awoll2313 and jasonreg are correct that with more tension there is more bounce back, it takes some fiddling around but you should be able to find a balance where, with some type of backing, the screen denting is minimal but there is no danger from rebound.

Thank you all for the replies. Im ok with some level of bounce back because I can control that with something behind it like you said. I hadn’t thought of using my old screen but think I may do that!

Im more worried about not creating a massive dent in one spot like happened with my old screen pretty quickly.

Keep your Carl's screen up and mount the new screen right in front of it. The Carl's screen will deaden the bounce back and keep the new screen from deflecting so much (less of a dent). I've done this and was very pleasantly surprised at the affect.

It’s great to see others doing the same thing. I had a Rain or Shine screen and got a second where I did that exact thing. In fact, the rain or shine screen has a black backing, so I hung it backward just so the black was right behind my impact screen.

I just ordered a carl’s enclosure to upgrade my sim room and I was planning on hanging one of my old screens right behind it. I found that having the second screen directly behind the first the rebound was virtually nothing. Recently, before deciding to upgrade the enclosure, I went through to do everything possible to try and remove the waves in the screen and made the front screen about as tight as possible. Even doing that with the screen behind makes bounce back pretty minimal.

I do have one question about this, on my Rain or Shine enclosure it seemed like the extra weight of the second screen caused the enclosure to kind of droop, I ended up attaching a support to the ceiling behind the enclosure and used a bungee to add extra support. Did any of you guys need to do anything to support the frame with two screens?

I used 2" EMT and have no sagging issues. I am guessing you used a thinner material?

Put a net behind the screen with a little more tension than the screen. That keeps the screen from taking the full force of each shot and it won’t penetrate the screen as much.

I also have a silky thin material between the net and screen, but I don’t think that’s a necessity.

Jae8201, I have the same screen you have (Carl's Premium) and I just put the second ball through it. Full disclosure, Skytrak says I've hit 70K balls into this screen, so it has taken a beating. Unfortunately, I did experience the same thing you're describing after just a few weeks of hitting - a big dent where the ball hits and visible wear on the surface of the screen. Since my sim room is fairly small and Skytrak has no ball flight distance requirement, just about any club I hit (other than driver) results in the ball contacting the screen in basically the same 1 foot square. I experimented with backing material, more tension, less tension, and nothing really worked for keeping the screen from denting.

You can see in the photos that I have a large dark stain on the top half of the screen. This came from hanging a moving blanket behind the screen. Since I noticed that issue, I remove the moving blankets and added a net. I have also rotated and flipped the screen a couple times to spread the impact spot around, but that didn't help the denting issue. The first hole I made in the screen was with a 56 degree wedge. Apparently spinny shots are the worst for the screen. The second, and final, was an 8 iron. I'm about to order my next screen which will be a SIGPRO Premium. The Carls screen sagged and dented from the first week. Knowing now that I hit 70K shots into it, I cant complain too much about needing a replacement.

You should try Bullseye Golf Premium screen had mine for over 2 years. Did not have problems with ball indentation. Just started showing signed if were si I purchased a screen saver off them to hang in front of my screen.
