  • Cable for Hanging Net

I have been lurking here for 2 months, learning as much as possible from old posts, however I am unsure of what to do with this challenge.

I am running a cable (19.5 ft) from one end of my garage to another to hang my net. What size cable (3/8th?) would you use assuming you are using two turnbuckles and eye hooks attached to the studs?

Also is there a better way to do this? The goal is to be able to slide the net like a curtain for the 10 feet that covers my water heater closet incase I need to get in there.

The net is on its way but the cable's I held off until I knew what size cable to use.

Thanks guys - I hope to be up and running by January.

This is what I did to slide the screen in and out.

Hi there, I have started to design a simulator setup for my garage and have realised that there is no way I can leave the screen in place all the time. I am

I span about 16' for the net that is on the right side in this pic. I think i used 3/16 when i did it.

Did you use turnbuckles too? If so did you get them from the net company?

Cable, cable guides and turnbuckles came from Home Depot or lowes.

What diameter (mm) steel wire did you use 5?. I have started on the Build my Sim road and have a frame built from Steel Tubing similar to the SuperBay at allsportsystems.com, I am a bit concerned of hitting the tube (even if wrapped in foam) that is used to hang impact projection screen, I am thinking of replacing just that horizontal tube with steel wire and maybe running some steel wire vertically to attached screen too as well. Screen will be 4m (W) x 2.7m (H). Seen a few cantilever designs might look at. Eventually want the screen framed in black, preferably with some padding.

wbond, when you did the angle iron in the bucket, how did you make sure it stayed straight and did not move while the cement? was settling?

I think I had it up against a piece of wood or something that was mounted to my basement ceiling.

Great. Do you have some pics of your setup?

It is still in the works but I'll take some pics after I get home from last minute Christmas shopping. I found that carabiners work well but zip ties on every other makes the net have less gap between the cable.

Top net is not hung yet because both nets came smelling like a futuristic plastic musk. They are going in the wash tonight so I can hang both tomorrow. I'm going to do a full write up once everything is complete.

If you look at the very top right of the first picture, you can see the other cable slightly. I am going to run a net across the top of the screen about 4 feet out to catch any high launch angle shots. I also may put some foam above the net as well to soften the sound, but that is the step I am currently stuck on... analysis paralysis

Sounds good. And did you put those into studs? Or did you just use drywall anchors?

Definitely put it into a stud or create a bridge between two studs. Drywall anchors probably won't be enough.

I attempted to do this in my garage last night, but discovered that I have metal studs in one wall. These are thin and don't have the depth that wood studs do. Has anyone else encountered this? I know that drywall anchors alone may not be enough... so I see 2 options:

                - Use a sheet metal stud anchor to anchor the eye hook into the metal stud
                - Anchor a piece of scrap wood to the wall/stud, and then anchor the eye bolt into the scrap wood

Does anyone else have experience doing something like this?

                Thanks!
