  • Mounting surround speakers to enclosure

I have a 10x10x10 enclosure that's supported with 3/4" conduit. It works quite well, but I got tired of using my projector's internal speaker to watch sporting events, movies, etc. My wife got me some surround sound speakers as a gift. I'm thrilled, but I don't know the best way to go about mounting them.. I thought about a few things:

1 Set them up on speaker 'stands'
2 Zip tie them to the conduit
3 Drill through the conduit to hard mount
4 Use actual speaker mounts to mount them on the ceiling

It also comes with a center channel and a subwoofer. The sub I can probably just put near the back of the area, out of the way. The center channel brings on some other concerns. I thought about just mounting it up high and center, and maybe bending some wire shelving to fashion a 'cage' for it. The same may be necessary for the other to front speakers.

I'm curious if anyone else has any ideas or input. I've been searching for a way to mount the speakers directly to conduit, but apparently that's not a very common problem.

Well, I think I may have found a solution to mount to the conduit:

It's a close loop clamp, and I think it may actually work out pretty well! Now I'm trying to decide how best to protect the front speakers. I think I may take some of that common rubbermaid wire shelf and bend it to make a cage.

I just mounted mine to the ceiling outside of the enclosure. My enclosure isn't here yet so I can't verify if the sound will make it through or not. I'm thinking it should be fine. If the speakers are in the enclosure then they might get hit with an errant shot.

I though about doing that, but my screen goes from ceiling to floor, so there really isn't any great place to mount them behind. I'm sure the screen would have an effect on sound quality.

I think the wire shelving may end up working pretty well to protect them. The shots to those areas should be rare, but I definitely want to make sure that those rare shots don't cause damage.

Don't think the screen will affect the sound. Mine are behind my impact screen and therefore are protected, out of sight, and there is no effect on sound quality whatsoever.

I would definitely mount them out of harms way.

Good to hear re behind screen not affecting sound.

Alright, so I installed the front speakers on the ceiling behind my screen. It seems like it will sound pretty good, but I was only watching TV, I didn't pop in a bluray or anything to really test.

I installed the surrounds by using some steel loop hose clamps. It works perfectly for my purposes. Here's what I used (I actually got some with rubber on them, but I ended up pulling that off):

I'm really happy with the setup! I'm looking forward to watching the fight this weekend with some quality sound!
