  • Need help with build

    Hi Everyone,

I have been following everyone's posts on here for a while. Looking at all the pics and reading about all the sim room builds is getting me excited and a little overwhelmed.

So, I am building a house and talked the wife into letting me have a sim room that doubles as a theater room. I attached a pic of our basement plan and have a yellow box around where the sim/theater will be. They are hiding the steel beam so it won't jut down from the ceiling.

The dimensions of the area are 15 ft 8 in wide, 26 ft 1 in deep, and 10 ft tall (but will prob be like 9'8" after the ceiling and things are installed).

I plan on the screen hanging 12 inches from the wall. Tee/ball position 9 ft from the screen. and starting seating about 5-6 ft back from the tee/ball position. I need to put 2 rows of seating behind the hitting area for movies, so a little limited on space that way.

I have no idea what size screen to get, and therefore, no idea what projector to get. I was on projectorcentral but not sure what i'm exactly doing there. I'd like a widescreen projection for movies. Also, where can I mount the projector so there is no shadow cast on the screen? Above the ball? 1 or 2 feet behind the ball? Any suggestions?

I plan on hanging the screen connected to angle iron. I'm not very handy. Can I just attach the angle iron to dry wall, or does it need to be attached to the studs in the wall? How much space is needed between the angle iron and the screen?

    Thanks for your help everyone!

I will be doing a similar build out, movie room doubling as a theater room. My house was just finished a littler over a year ago, now that it is settled I will start on the basement. Have had Skytrak since Jan and I have been testing it in the meantime and here is what I have found. I have a short throw projector (can't think of the name right now) but initial I had it set up less than 10Ft from the screen and the resolution was off using iOS, so if you are using iOS you may have some challenges with filling the screen., I ran into an issue where the screen will overlap onto my ceiling and or will be more narrow than your screen. If you are building out a theatre rom and golf sim room, Im guessing you will find this annoying too. I believe there is more flexibility with PC as I haven't had the same issues, but I build the screen to fit projector max size based on where I needed it. Right now I have TCG for PC, my projector is 10 ft from the screen and I hit directly under it, which you will want to do as well, and the screen size is 9ft x14.5ft. you truly feel like you are golfing and when friends come over they are amazed. Make sure the projector is mounted directly over the center of the club while in your stance. I am 6'3, and I have long E.T arms and have never come close to hitting it. I can offer some advice concerning projectors (I purchased 2, and build 2 screens as well) is figure out your max screen size first, then start looking at projectors that can fill the space at the distance you need to place it.

        thanks for the replies guys.
do you know how far studs are usually?

as far as the screen size and projector image, i tried looking at projectorcentral and i can't seem to get the right image size for the optimal throw distance. it recommends either <8 ft throw distance for the short throws or like 12-14 ft for the long throws. i've only checked a couple of the benQ and optoma brand projectors. Your 14.5ft wide, 9 ft high screen I think is what I want. Does the image go down to the floor? if you have some time and can get the name of your projector, I would much appreciate it!

anyone else have any input on projector/screen size?

        Thanks!

Studs are almost always 16 inches on center. You can build a frame inside the drywall and attach the angle iron to that. Given that it's a new house you can put the studs where you like.

I recommend 10 feet ball to screen for a lot of reasons. The big difference in projectors is throw. 15 feet from the screen is pretty ideal.

Hey jason, what do u have backing the screen that u can get away with 8 inches to the wall? Do u have surround sound? If so, did u place the speakers behind the screen?

I use archery type material, the screen quality is not as good as high end screens but good enough fir me. It's like a mesh, so it's quiet , and has minimal bounce back. So no back net, I will eventually get a better screen, will keep my existing screen as the back net . Do not use speakers as thus is just purely for golf.

My room width will be about 15 ft 8 inches. Is that enough to hit from the middle for really tall players? I have a buddy that is 6 ft 5 in tall
