  • Sim Planning, Minimum Height Mats?

    Hi guys,
First time poster. Love the site and the community. I just bought a new house with a 3rd port garage that I want to try to put in a golf sim. I am planning way before I have even moved in but the excitement is killing me. Room specs are 21'' deep, 10'' wide, but only 9" 4' high. I know I will have to offset but I am 6'' and did some SLOW practice swings and I am close on my driver; my fear is if i stand any taller or higher I will hit. The good news is the rafters do go the same direction as the sim so I might be able to swing between them if I take out the drywall. Raising the rafters may be too much work as the master bedroom is above.

    Question 1:
On average, is the swing usually higher on the back swing or the follow through. Because of the current storage I could not fully swing to practice to verify but I was thinking if it was one or the other I could just make sure I am between rafters.

    Question 2:
Does anyone have a sim/mat recommendations. I was going to go with the Pro Tee but i'm worried that the sensor matt is just too thick. Would a standing sensor make more sense because it would sit on top of a mat? Should I just plan on losing x inches for the floor no matter what sim i use? Are there good hitting matts that are quite thin or am I going to break my hands hitting onto concrete below.

    Thanks for any advice!

Don't believe there is anything as a good, quite thin hitting mat. You should plan to lose about 1.5-2" or so.

My garage is 9ft 4" tall, and I swing a driver without even coming close. I'm 6ft 2" tall, and all my clubs are 1/2" longer than standard.

I've got a thick mat on a thick rubber surround too, so I must be losing about 3" to that. I was cautious for a start (probably like anyone swinging indoors for the first time), but now I don't hold back!!

I agree with @3peps. I have the same dimensions as you for height with protee. My friend let go of his driver with one hand and hit the ceiling once. If you do not let go there is no worry.

Wow... You must get pretty steep. My ceilings are about 9' 9" and I've had guys over 6' swing driver. They don't even come close to hitting the ceiling. With a good swing plane, you should be a little higher on the follow through.

As for the mat. There are some pretty thin mats out there, but I would never suggest them. They are really hard on the joints.

Guys thanks so much for the responses. This has raised my confidence significantly.
Maybe its mental more than anything... its just scary looking up at a ceiling is scary. Once I clear out the space and try to swing I think I will be much happier.

I think I will keep going down the Pro Tee approach then. Thanks again!

Go to my profile and look at my media. Go to the beginning of time, somewhere about October 1016 and look at how I made my hitting platform. Laying the 2x3 on the sides save an inch or 2

My rec-room tunnel is 9'6, and if I swing inside of it, I don't even come close. I'm 6'1. It shouldn't be an issue, whatsoever, unless maybe you have a super-steep swing.
