Putting greens

what type or brand of putting greens are folks using for their simulator build?
what type of surface is considered better in general - polypropylene or nylon?

I happened to get a good deal on ebay for mine but i don't know what it is made out of. Sorry. I do know that when i bought turf for my simulator the company sent me a bunch of samples to choose from so i suggest you do the same. I ended up cutting the samples into coasters. Don't buy your turf from lowes or home depot. Make sure to go with turfactorydirect (i used them) or syntheticturf or other turf specifc companies (assuming you are covering a decent sized area). Turf Factory Direct has a putter green turf section on their website.

I use a Birdie ball putting green but not on the sim. I use it to practice putting. Gotta say I am pretty happy with it so far!

i did look at some stuff at Home Depot and quickly realized it was not what I was looking for.
i have reached out to some turf companies and some are sending me samples as well. Got a good laugh on cutting up samples into coasters - now I know what to do with mine as well

of course, each of companies I hav inquiries out to tell me their product is the best and to avoid nylon if they sell a polypropylene based product or avoid polypropylene if they sell a nylon based product

I think a good putting turf really, really adds to the total golf sim experience. If you are fortunate to to have the space, I would go as big and as high quality as I could afford. I have been down the home depot outdoor carpet route and have finally moved up to a quality turf and it was well worth it.

I had samples sent from every company that would send them. I finally settled on NP 45 which you can find here:

I built my subfloor out of 2 x 4 (lay flat) then 3/4 plywood and then the turf itself is 1/2 inch. This all adds up to 2.75 inches which allows me to have my Protee hitting mat flush and gave enough drop to cut out 4 putting holes. The turf comes in 15 ft rolls, so I made my overall green 15 x 22 that way I have no seem.

Hi Captargo - I can echo gene438's comments. I went with the NP50, also from STI and have a 15x15 area. I'm really pleased with the surface and the customer service from my two local STI reps was excellent. Thoroughly recommended!

I toke a shot in the dark and stoped by my local carpet and tile store. And was pleasantly surprised that they could get all kinds of turf and and several sample boards. Ended up ordering my sim/putting green at $3.11 a foot and also will be getting the turf to do my backyard this winter.

gene438 did you go with the turf with the cushion backing?

Yes, the black cushion is approximately 1/8 inch and the overall thickness of the turf is 1/2 inch.

BlechBOX right now it shows a sale on nylon 36 UR for $1.75sq.ft. and then the two-tone putt for $2.50sq.ft. which did you end up going with? hard to tell on their sample pics what might be the better option.

gene438, I’m looking to use a similar setup on my sim area (SkyTrak w/ 4x4 CCE mat) ... with the turf being flush to the mat, is it possible to basically putt directly from mat to hole, during a sim round? Or if you have tried that, do you experienced an issues?

Yes, I do not have the add on putting sensor for the ProTee.....so, I do put directly off my hitting mat unto the putting turf. I think I have it about as flush as I can get it, but sometimes I get a little bump going over the protee mat.....but it work surprisingly well

The more I think about it I was leaning toward a small “drop” from hitting mat to putting surface as the best way to go. Although it’s not a true roll, if I get it right it should work well. Thanks for the reply.

With skytrak u just need a smooth surface I think abou a foot long and a foot wide or so in front of skytrak to read the putt. After that your ball could fall off a cliff but sim would show correct putt.
