  • Hitting Mat recessed into basement floor

I have a CCE hitting mat and was thinking about cutting out a 5x5 section of concrete about 2 inches down then using self leveling mix to level the section. Then put in the CCE mat into the cut out to stop it from moving. This will allow me to have an extra inch or so of head room and have the mat level with the surrounding green carpet.

Question is has anyone done this before or have other ideas?

Do you need the extra inch? Sounds pretty expensive/involved to cutout that size of an area, relevel it and set the mat into that spot. Could you raise the surrounding area to the height of the mat, might be easier.

The room is 12x20, so raising the area I think would cost more. Just chipping a 5x5 area and using leveling mix to level the mat area would be a few hours and about $50. Would like the extra inch and would like the mat to not turn.

GolftiniToad, Did you ever recess this into the basement floor? I was considering doing this in the garage. My current setup has a stance mat and a hitting mat that are about an inch above the floor. Have to move them out of the way to pull a car in. Ideally, if they were flush with the floor, I could just pull the car right in over them. an added bonus would be the ability to putt from the mat which would be on the same level as the garage floor. I don't think I would even need 2 inches. Would love to know if it was worth the effort. Thanks!

I did do this. But I ended up only cutting the hitting mat to reduce the amount to cut out. Then I just stand on the carpet and it works fine. I will attach some photos.

Ive got a very similar setup and was just getting on here to ask for hitting mat suggestions. I had my sim put in about 8 weeks ago and absolutely hate the mat that they used. I am 100% convinced it is giving me bad feedback on the simulator, most shots seem about 10% short, which I think I could learn to live with but the problem I have is anything that is remotely fat turns out absolutely horrible.

What hitting mat are you using on yours and do you like it?

I have the 1x4 Fiberbuilt mat. I had the 5x5 CCE mat but it isn't forgiving. Shoulder/wrist pain.

Just out of curiosity, wouldn't let's say some 1/4 round moulding from HD and some liquid nails around the mat hold it tight, or some tapcons right through the corners of the mat?

That an invasive solution. I used 1” gym mats and grass carpet from HD. Same to slightly lower height than CCE mat. Much simpler. Filled floor space and allowed outside to roll out.

We did this in my brother's basement setup but only because it was a height issue with his ceiling being only 9 feet. It's a good way to maximize the height but if that's not an issue there are better ways to secure the mat.

I thought about that. And it was more of a cleaner look and gain just a bit more height. I have 9' so that helped with the few hits to the ceiling that did happen. Plus it makes it level.

Thank you so much for the fast response and the pictures! I forgot to come back and check and for some reason I wasn’t notified. This is great and I may do something like this in my garage so that the car can drive right in without moving a mat out of the way!

Hey, did you ever get to reinforcing the ceiling joists? Would love to see your progress. I am trying to do the same things, cut the floor and also raise the ceiling 4/5 inches. Thanks.
