  • Hitting full shots off of putting turf instead of a mat?

Hi, I’m new here. Just getting my build underway. Was hoping to use some putting green turf to line my garage and putt on it but also hit full shot off of it. I read a post where someone thought this would be possible. They had 1/2 inch foam tiles under but inserted a gel pad in the hitting area. However they went on to say that gel pad wasn’t necessary and maybe not even foam tiles.

Ill probablt hit 30-40 iron shots a day in the simulator. But want a realistic experience and not feel like I’m literally hitting off of concrete (which is the base that I will be working from).

im not super handy so building these hitting stations etc probablt isn’t an option for me, thoughts on just laying down putting turf in my garage either directly on it or over foam tiles and having one seamless area to putt and hit from?

If so, would any of the high quality putting materials referenced on this site work? Or are there specific ones that I should be looking at.

    thanks

I was going to use 3/4 plywood for subfloor, but went with 1/2 foam pads locked together. For the stance area I used a 1/2 in rubber Matt from tractor supply, I was able to cut out a 18x10 inch area for future gel mat. Currently I use the 1/2 Matt iusedfor the sun floor in the cut out. I put 2 side carpet tape on the hitting area foam, along with placing more tape around the hitting area cut out. I use synlawn precision putt turf. I’m sure in time the synlawn will wear. I will the cut it out and replace the turf in the area.

Hitting shots off putting surfaces, even with a bit of padding may get you accustomed to some bad habits.

Ever been to a driving range and hit off of one of those mats that has very little in the way of fiber? It's just so easy to hit as the club never catches on anything and what should register as a "fat" shot just bounces off the hard mat and plows right through the ball - and shows up as a good hit.

Spend a bit of money and get a hitting mat.

In fact, cheap out on the putting green and spend it on the mat.
