  • Installing regular carpet around hitting mat and hitting insert?

Hello all, I have built a simulator in my basement with 9ft ceilings, laminate floor and currently have a stance mat with a cutout for 2 fiberbuilt panels. In front of that towards the screen is a 6x10 mat from all turf mats. I would like to build out the entire area for full coverage and either have just a cutout for the hitting panel ( possibly 1x3 fiberbuilt, maybe STI ez tee, or a larger cutout for the hitting mat and hitting panels...I have looked into getting STI NP 50 to cover the entire area using ultra base system panels underneath to increase height of the NP 50 to the level of the hitting panel/stance mat. Those products are pricey, and was wondering if anyone has just used regular low pile carpet on carpet padding surrounding a hitting mat plus or minus the hitting panel insert? I am not trying to do any putting with cups on the exposed area. I have attached a pic of my setup and pic of the fullswing setup.
I was thinking of something similar to what fullswing golf does with the black border around the green stance/hitting mat? If anyone has done something similar, please post comments and pictures. thanks.

I just bought turf factory direct elite which is 20 percent off. 2 bucks per sq ft. I forget who but someone else on here just used it as well. Looks decent. I'm putting foam insulation board under it because it's cheap. Will see if it holds up

Check out my build I just completed. I had similar setup as yours with 6x10 all turf mats before. I bought putting elite greens from turf favtory direct with 20% off. It cost less than $1000 for 15'x22'. I also bought dricore r panels to keep the floor height similar to fiberbuilt 1x3 panel. It's only off by 1/4"inch and you can still putt from fb panel without losing speed/distance.

I did what you are thinking. I found all the turf based coverings way too pricey. I went to a local carpet store and got a low pile carpet for 1.99/sq ft 14ft x 16ft. Took it to a local carpet installer who bound the outside edges to make it like an area rug so it wouldn't unravel. I then did the cut out section for my hitting mat myself. I used light brown color instead of black. The picture is during my construction.

Thanks. Did you use carpet padding to raise the height to that of the mat? Was it too soft or any issue?

No I didn't use padding. I tucked the carpet under the edge of my mat where I cut it. The guy that did the binding couldn't do the inside corners of cut out section. My mat sets about 1/4 inch higher than top the carpet. I have rubber mats from Tractor Supply under the carpet so balls don't bounce much. Putts nice and straight for game play.

Unfortunately mine is still rolled up in my garage, making sure I am comfortable with setup before I cut it into place. bongta029 could weigh in on the TFD

FYI when I researching putting surfaces I came across an article claiming that carpets from a Camry make the best putting surfaces.

I am sure there are many carpets available that roll just as well as turf.

What size is your screen/enclosure? Did you make it yourself, or purchase it? I have a room that's 17' wide and would like to do a 16' wide screen. Just wondering if you build the enclosure yourself do you need a bar down the center to reduce the potential for it to sag?

HI Guys. New to the forum and have been reading a lot on here. I am looking to do something similar to this black flooring surrounding my Fiberbuilt Mat. Wondering if carpet or poly or nylon turf would be best. Any shared experiences would be appreciated.
                    Cheers

I elected to lay turf down for the entire sim area and put my 5x5 mat on top with a previous cutout for my various hitting inserts. It seems to be working well, I have the mat taped down so there is no movement. Saved the hassle of finding the perfect cutout of the door turf to recess the hitting mat.

Very attractive sim room. I am just starting mine. I have a couple of questions on equip setup. What is your distance from tee to screen, projector type and location and simulator?
I intend to install Uneekor QED and Optomo EH200st projector. I also have 9' ceiling so I am encouraged that it seems to work for you. I also intend to use 5 STAR Gorilla Perfect Reaction golf mat 4x5. I would appreciate any comments and/or recommendations.

tee to screen about 8ft or so. benq ST 2150 located just above hitting area in front of QED. figure out location of projector based on full coverage of the screen. no substitute for actually holding it up and checking. Some leeway with focus and so forth. pad the ceiling in front of screen for possibly really high flop shots.
