  • Golf mat V Carpet

    Hello all,

I was wondering if anybody has used carpet for their sim set up? I have been looking at turf mats but feel carpet would do nicely and feel good. If anybody would like to give their pennies worth it would be much appreciated.

Are you thinking the carpet for your hitting surface?

If you are thinking about using carpet for hitting area think again unless you are exclusively hitting off a tee. Regular carpet would probably last about 10 or less iron shots with a downward strike aside from the fact that your wrists/forearms/elbows will probably hurt from the sudden deceleration of the club head. You can get away with carpet for the stance area except you will rapidly wear it from the twisting going on with your feet during a swing.

I do have some indoor/outdoor carpet in between the stance/ hitting surface and the impact screen which is more for aesthetics and some cushioning for balls dropping of the impact screen.

Interesting, I have been using small carpet mats for chipping but not full ball strikes with the irons. I find the turf at the driving ranges leave plastic marks in my clubs . Not a big deal but not ideal. Do you have any recommendations. As note I am in Canada. Thanks for your input

I think that most good quality mats that are available today do not leave residue on the golf club.

None of the better matts leave a residue
            truestrike
            cce
            fibrebuilt
            whittek Quattro
mare all in my sim shed
            all are available world wide
            and all are quality products

they all have plus’s and minuses as well as fans and detractors
mom not sure anyone can really tell you which is best for you
            its simply trial and error

            im a fan of the
            truestike and Quattro
I also like cce but it is a hard matt on the body

fibrebuilt is easy on the body but I don’t feel it’s a great matt to practice on as it gives a false sense of good ball striking
But many here swear by it

if your a good ball striker any of them will work well

carpets not a great way to go

Mats at the driving range take a beating from being outdoors in the sun. This deteriorates the synthetic fiber used and it flakes off on the bottom of clubs. It's no big deal since it wipes right off using your fingers.

Since you are in Canada I'd suggest you contact Par2Pro as they are based somewhere in Canada. I've dealt with them and they were an excellent supplier to deal with. All the quality mats are decent. Some are firmer and some are softer.

I'd suggest getting one that most closely matches the grass you play from. As an example some people don't like CCE mats since they are firm. That's true but if you primarily play off Bermuda or zoysia (probably not in Canada) a CCE is an excellent mat since those type grasses really penalize any even slightly fat shot as does a CCE mat.
