  • DIY stance mat.

I've an outdoor setup, and trying various options to get the best hitting mat which wont ruin my wrists in a months time!

I initially had a 1.5m x 1.5m range mat which was ok on the wrists but virtually unusable due to really low spin numbers (<4000 with a 9i. I moved to a strip of ptt2 which gives great spin numbers as I would expect, but almost no protection for the wrists!!! After reading on here, I bought a piece of motorcycle seat gel padding to put under which feels much better on the wrists.

My main problem now is that my setup is outside on the patio, which is fine for now, but in summer when the kids want to go out playing, the mat is going to be in the way. The range mat ways an absolute tonne and will soon become a pain trying to move it every day! I am looking to build a very lightweight stance mat, which can be stored in the shed when not in used. I will also cut a hole in this to contain the gel and hitting strip. Overall height of the hitting strip will be about 1.5inches, so I would like the stance mat to match this. I was thinking of buying some gym mats which are about 10mm thick and sticking 3 together and making a 1.5m x 1.5m square which a cut out for the hitting strip.

Has anyone done similar? Or have a better idea for a lightweight option? All the purpose built range mats look to cost a fortune and heavy, I dont really want to spend £500+ on a mat when 80% if it will never be used. I could buy the gym mats and a piece of fake grass for <£50
    Many thanks

    Danny,
I have made 3 variations of a stance mat so far.The base has been different each time but the surface has always been the same, artificial grass that I got at Home Depot. The first one was 3/4” plywood with 2 layers of indoor carpet padding w/ the turf. It was a pain to move and if I did not it absorbed water to the point that it broke down the adhesive I used to hold the layers together. Next one was a variation or the first which was lighter but still not easy to move. The latest version was made to match the height of the Quattro hitting strip that I had gotten. It uses closed cell interlocking mats that I got on Amazon covered with the artificial grass from Home Depot. It’s very light and can be moved from inside to outside easily along with my hitting strip. The biggest issue is that mat tends to move a little over the course of hitting but it’s not that big of a deal as it’s easy to reposition. One of the things I really like is that the stance mat can be used as a slight rough/first fairway cut/fringe. Only time will tell if it will hold up. I went this route because my setup is outside and not completely finalized yet. Perhaps when I come up with a permanent design I may buy a full size mat but as of right it suits my needs very well. Here are a few pictures. Best of luck.Click image for larger version

Thanks for this! I'm trying to do something similar. How did you adhere your grass and your hitting strip to the interlocking mats? Liquid nails or something similar?

I used outdoor carpet adhesive that I got at Home Depot. It’s holding up ok. I may have to reglue the edges in spots. I don’t leave the mat out in the weather. I used the same adhesive on the putting strip and that stays outside and the adhesive is holding just fine.

That's looking good. Do you have a link to the interlocking mats? How do you find the hitting strip? Does it give realistic spin numbers on the mevo? Do you have a link

    Thanks

Sorry, don’t have the link but if you look on Amazon you should find them. The hitting strip came from http://www.yuhegolfmats.com/ you can email them at steven@yuhegolfmats.com. This is the mat talked about in this thread https://golfsimulatorforum.com/forum...hit-off-of-wow I am the wrong guy to ask about spin numbers as I have a swing that is in a constant state of change right now(this is code for, it kinda sucks but it’s getting better each day)
