I'm using a $200 4x5 mat from golfers warehouse. The feel isn't realistic although I have nothing to compare it to. What do the pricey top of the line mats bring to the sim? Just trying to gauge how high a priority it is to upgrade.

Quite a few usually end up basing it on injury prevention. You will hit considerably more balls due to convenience vs hitting off mats at other facilities so finding one that doesn’t end up hurting you is key. Many don’t find out until they start feeling issues after some time. I would say all of the top mats claim they replicate a natural feel of hitting down theough the ball but I can tell you for certain they do not all feel the same, comparing divot action, truestrike, magstrike and Fiberbuilt and CCE.Last edited by wbond; 11-17-2021, 08:28 PM.

I can second wbond comments. I have used CCE, Quattro, Fiberbuilt and now Holy Grail all feel different. I ended up using fiberbuilt the most last year and recently started using Holy Grail. Currently its my favorite but they were all my favorite when new.
If looking for a low cost ($50) option might try this fiberbuilt insert https://amzn.to/3qRrAUb

Guess a lot depends on how often you hit fat shots and how clean you pick the ball. I have the quattro which in my eyes is still fairly expensive at $500 and has caused me enough pain since getting it in August that it hurt my real life golf game. Wishing I had spent a bit more money or just did a hitting strip.

I flipped the mat over and measured 7-1/4” from the side and 6-1/4 front to back to center the grail. I then just traced the edge with a sharpie and used a utility knife with a new blade to cut out the lines I made. Each side took about 8 cuts cutting only about 1/4 into the foam to start. Each mat is different but on the Quattro mat it has a nice foam backing and it really held the blade in my initial cut well for the rest of the cuts. So end of day a tape measure, sharpie, fresh blade and about one hour making sure to take my time and it came out great. Have it completely flush with the mat and it feels SO MUCH BETTER now.

Does the Holy Grail need to be trimmed shorter to account for the Quattro being not as tall as some of the other mats out there. I own the quattro and know that is is only 1 and 1/4 inch think. Not sure how think the holy grail insert is, but I would suspect that it is slightly taller. Did you have to trim some off of the holy grail to make it a perfect fit?

You are correct that the holy grail is taller. My mat is sitting on the cheap grizzly grass that Home Depot and lowes sells. The holy grail is sitting directly on the ground. The grizzly grass is about 1/4” so you will need about that much height to make up the difference if you want it to sit flush.

I don't think you'll know until you hit off of whatever you purchase. I've hit off of Country Club Elite big mat & the CCE hitting mats, the Holy Grail, Truestrike gel, Callaway Launch Zone & the Fiberbuilt Flight Deck. (I think the Fiberbuilt & Callaway are the same thing, just packaged differently.) To me, they all kind of feel the same. (I'd love to try a divot action, but they seem to be out of business.) Would also like to try a Fairway Pro, but they don't respond to communications either.
The Flight Deck was nice to hit off of, but it also is not even close to what your lie would be in a fairway. The grass fibers are so stiff that it's like having the ball on a tee all the time. The fibers are spaced far enough apart that they offer little resistance to anything so it's sweet to hit off of, just not realistic.
Currently using a Truestrike gel , but only because that's the last type I purchased. The gel layer in the Truestrike is not very thick, and it's underneath the "turf" so, IMOO, the cushioning action is damped and I think it's overrated, but overrated in the sense that it's not really any better than anything else.
Ordered a Sigpro Softy, will be interesting to try that.
Building my own combo gel/divot action, will post that when done. Also think I can build something like the FaiwayPro, but that'll take awhile.
Sorry for the rambiling on, I just don't think there's one that can truly replicate grass.

Funny you mentioned Fairway Pro. I never heard of it until this morning I stumbled across a review on youtube and posted it. I don't know what to think of the concept. I can't decide if it's realistic and innovative or just gimmicky. I want to know if the yardage is true. If it adds yards to your shots it's not helping you on the course at all.

hey - what did you use for the padding and material cover around the cage poles protector? This is exactly what I am looking to do.Originally posted by ExplorNH View PostSo I just installed my holy grail and I should never have waited so long. I decided to install mine in my Quattro mat and also decided to keep one tee location since I like my adjustable tee for hitting driver.

MongoOnlyPawn - wow, you're one of the few that has tried nearly ALL of the mats! Your opinion of them is valuable.I don't think you'll know until you hit off of whatever you purchase. (I'd love to try a divot action, but they seem to be out of business.) The Fiberbuilt excels in durability (300,000 strikes) and protecting arms/wrists/elbows (priceless). I don't think Fiberbuilt will ever measure as good as something like a Truestrike - or similar with a gel insert...The Flight Deck was nice to hit off of, but it also is not even close to what your lie would be in a fairway. The grass fibers are so stiff that it's like having the ball on a tee all the time. The fibers are spaced far enough apart that they offer little resistance to anything so it's sweet to hit off of, just not realistic.
Where would you expect the gel layer - above the turf? Have you ever considered building your own Gel pad mat?Currently using a Truestrike gel , but only because that's the last type I purchased. The gel layer in the Truestrike is not very thick, and it's underneath the "turf" so, IMOO, the cushioning action is damped and I think it's overrated, but overrated in the sense that it's not really any better than anything else.
I've just ordered SIGPro Softy too - have you received yours yet and what is your opinion of it?Ordered a Sigpro Softy, will be interesting to try that.
Love to see that - are you close to finishing it?Building my own combo gel/divot action, will post that when done.
I don't know how you'll pull that off? That spring action turf will be hard to duplicate without some type of manufacturing involved? Also think I can build something like the FaiwayPro, but that'll take awhile.
And that's the reason we all continue to try... however, you're right because of one thing for sure - very few actually build out a mat that includes rough, first cut and fairway on the same mat, and that's what you need to replicate grass - to go along with something like a gel insert, or divot action. Only Divot-Action tried it and shows it on their website... Wish I could order one, but they are out of business as the owner passed away due to COVID-19!I just don't think there's one that can truly replicate grass.
