  • Turf Flooring

Hello all, we got our turf in today. As GungHo golf suggested, we will use 1" EVA foam tiles to go under it. We will have a 22' X 30' area of turf. We planned on cutting in an area for the Holy Grail hitting strip and just laying the turf on top of the tiles. Will this work or do we need to cut in a hitting mat as that turf is attached to the pad? I'm concerned that we will twist the turf up under our feet when we hit.

If your turf is high quality, it will work just as well as a stance mat for where you stand, and feels perfect with 1" EVA tiles underneath. No need for a mat.

Thanks Ron, so to clarify, no need to glue the turf to the foam tiles if it is good quality?

I did this and had the same concern about wearing the turf where I take my stance and then having to replace the entire area. It has help up very well after about 50 rounds. Much less wear than I expected although there is still some. I also have been wearing shoes with a pretty flat soul to try to cut down on wear

Now that you mentioned that JayJo13 - I just thought of it... I'm planning on wearing my golf cleats when I play in my Sim. I wonder how much wear that will put on the Grass-Tex Club Champion turf (with padding) that I bought? I guess the only way to know for sure is to monitor for wear?

I went with something similar, a putting surface everywhere and then just a 1x2 hitting strip cut out. I went with a plywood floor underneath though just because I didn't want to have to replace anything underneath down the line. The turf will get some wear from your feet but it's not terrible. just don't wear golf shoes with claws on the bottom

What Jwheels9876 ??? No golf shoes with cleats? I can't imagine playing without them, in fact I am planning on wearing them for sure, guess I need to re-think a 'hitting mat' to go along with the putting turf I laid down then?

no claws on the bottom.. You can wear the other ones with the rubber "nubs" on the bottom. You just don't want the claws digging into your turf over and over again, that will cause it to tear it over time i'm sure. I wear just tennis shoes or the spike less golf shoes and see minimal wear over a year time but there is definitely some

Jwheels9876 - please confirm on this... My shoes have plastic cleats on them, are those safe? Are those what you call 'rubber nubs', or should I replace the plastic cleats with rubber cleats? I ask because back when I started playing everyone had metal cleats (spikes). Of course I do not have those now, but the plastic cleats (or nubs?).

They (plastic cleats) are nowhere near as 'spikey' as metal cleats, so maybe this will be fine? I absolutely can NOT wear tennis shoes comfortably and play golf (even in my Sim). It just will not feel right, and I'll feel like I'm slipping all over the place... now I believe there are some tennis shoes with just 'bumps' on them, maybe that's what you refer to?

I'm in process of considering what I will use as a 'stance mat' to protect my putting turf now... If it is even close to being an issue - I'll likely cut out a 4'x5' area and drop in a stance mat - just in case. If I wear that out with my plastic cleats, I can always replace it, but I don't see replacing this expensive grass-tex 'Club Champion' putting turf - it would just require me to order way more than I needed to get a piece that size. I'll be looking for a low cost stance mat - to act as a stance mat only but that has great durability... I think I had a 'Dura Pro - DW Quail' about 2 months ago, I tested out in the yard... that might do the trick?

I'm wondering if the turf will move around if not glued down. We were wanting to just lay it on top of the EVA foam tiles.

Mine is not glued or anything, just laid down over the EVA foam tiles and it doesn't move at all. No need to glue it. My turf area is 14 feet x 18 geet so it it pretty heavy. It would take a lot to move it.

Is that the gungho hitting strip? Where did you get the turf from? thanks

The hitting strip is a YTG-3D, which is basically a Quattro Mat. The turf is called Pro-Putt and it from Rymar Grass

Top-quality turf like our Money Putt won't move around and lays flat on EVA tiles, no tape or glue.

GungHoGolf What if I want to make it portable? I was thinking of placing it on plywood but what would you put on the bottom of the plywood so the mat won't move around?

I've seen some people use heavy duty Velcro or carpet tape to secure mats to different surfaces

DS12, problem, It can't be velcro as it will be placed in the garage. I was thinking maybe gym mats on the bottom of the plywood? That way I can just pick up the whole mat and place it on the wall when I'm done for the day?

Gorilla carpet gripper stuff for hardwood floors should work on concrete. But 4" square of adhesive velcro at the four corners should work as well in a garage.

What did you use for the edge of your turf? I have Pro Putt that I'm cutting to size and I need to get that same edging.

Nothing. My turf overhangs slightly (1/4") and you don't really notice nor does it look unfinished.

We let ours hang over the edge of the foam and no problems there. Looks nice too.
