Best Sub Floor for Putting Turf

If you build a frame of 2x4’s but with the 2x4’s flipped from how you build a wall, and then put 1” plywood on top of that you’ll have a 2” base. Then mount your turf on top of that. Depending how thick your turf is, you could go with 3/4” ply and still get 2” for the cups. If you vacuum the putting surface a lot it can slightly speed up the stimp but it is minimal. I think the sanding technique is typically used outdoors. I doubt in Aus you’re troubled by particularly cold concrete, but if you are, you can put hard insulation between the “studs”.

I wouldn't judge the foam on itself, the turf on top of it takes most of the weight as long as it's supported properly and is a large enough surface area. I used the 2' x 2' x 1" foam tiles and taped all seams so as not to create any ruts and I couldn't be happier. What are you hitting off of? I would start there and build up to that, you can add cups by cutting them down so you don't need full depth. My base is just under 1.5" to match my hitting mat so I could putt right off of there and to a cup that I cut down on a table saw.

It wanted to create a base so I could have some 2inch cups put in

Have you tried just laying the turf directly on the concrete? Not sure what putting interlocking tiles under the turf will accomplish other than making it bumpy. Have you looked at any Big Moss putting strips? https://bigmoss.com/ Not as cheap, but they make a great product.

Just by them selves. Was thinking about using a 25mm thick plywood on the concrete floor then get a denser 15mm gym mat to go on top of it

Are you testing the foam tiles by themselves or underneath the turf?

Ok so today I tested out some 40mm EVA mma tiles but they were way too squishy. Has anybody uses a wood base before? Ideally want a 50 mm depth so I can put some cut down cups in

I wish I could slow my TFD Putting Elite down. It rolls at like 11-12 and I play all public courses. I know TFD offers in-fill to speed them up but honestly, I wish it went the other way.

From your first post it sounds like you haven't putted on your turf yet? As far as my turf goes I added cork and foam for 2 reasons and neither was the turf speed. First, it was to level it up to the hitting mat and secondly, to create depth that would allow me to add a putting cup. I have read where guys mention adding sand to the turf to up the speed but man that sounds messy.

I am in Australia so i am pretty limited to turf selections. I purchase a turf that’s 1/2 inch thick designed as a putting surface. I wanted to order money putt but nobody would ship it internationally. Any tips for keeping the turf at a good speed? Appreciate all the advice on here guys thanks again

Best Sub Floor for Putting Turf
Hi guys first time poster, long time lurker on this forum. Have finally bit the bullet and purchased some turf for my garage floor which is concrete. Been looking through the forums and can’t decide what subfloor to use. I have the option of 20mm and 40mm EVA gym tiles. Just wondering what kind of speeds I can expect with using EVA on top of concrete, and which thickness to pick. Would ideally like to go with the 40mm and my turf is 12mm so I could try pop in some 2inch holes to make it realistic. Any suggestions or ideas on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks GuysTags: None
