GOLF BALLS
First of all there is no substitute for real balls. Especially the ball you normally play with. If for some reason you don't want to hit real balls because of limited space, fear of damaging something or someone in the house, weaker impact screen etc. then there is an option to use limited flight golf balls. Some folks will use these indoors. The advantage is that it is safer and is less damaging to the impact screen. The disadvantage is the feel compared to a real ball. As well it really depends on the simulator as to how the practice balls will be simulated. In sims that don't measure the ball at all such as Optishot or P3pro then the simulation will appear as if you are hitting real balls. In sims that measure the ball then the simulation should show a shorter distance of carry for these balls. Some sims such as Protee will allow for distance "tweaking" to increase the carry to be similar to a real ball. This is very important for normal game play. There are many different types of balls but essentially they can be plastic (not recommended), high density foam or surilyn. Here are some popular options:

I prefer the Almost but also will use real balls indoors.

Great info bubba22. Personally, I prefer real balls but will use almost Golf balls for flop shots once in a while.

As for tees, I highly recommend 4 more yards tees. Blues for drivers, yellows for woods off the tee box, and reds for irons.

I really like the reduced noise and the reduced screen damage of the Almost balls, but the major downside is not feeling the off-center shots as well. No substitute for hitting that rock to give the feedback on what you are doing wrong. I also noticed my swing speed slow down a bit with the Almost balls - mental impact of a softer impact sensation. That probably helped with a more controlled swing, but not great for grooving a faster swing.

I switched back to real balls and went with balls with a very durable cover (to limit wedge scratching) - Pinnacle Gold or something

Andy, I use a tee on my 3 wood only tall enough to get the ball level with the surface. If I put the ball ahead of the tee spot my CHS is really low. i use castle tees others use 4 yard more tees or something like that. I bought 200 assorted tees and have not broke open the second bag yet in 2 years. For irons I dont use a tee even when teeing off.

On the colored balls I used to use yellow balls but I have switched to a nike vapor ball now they are cheap on ebay and you can find a ton of them. so far this year I have ruined 24 balls. But at the price I paid its not a concern. some use a harder cover ball but I really like the feel of the vapor. feels just like my bridgstones at 1/8th the price.

You hit irons without a tee? I did that before and ruined my white tee holder. It dug it up pretty good. Had to replace it. Do you push the white all the way down, or is it level with the top of the grass on the protee?

I hit without a tee as well. I have to focus on placing the clubs in the sensor groove when I line up or I hit the fat shots (something mental about placing the club too far back). And I have blown apart the tee holder after a year. But it's only $7-8 to replace, so no big deal.

My tee holder sets about 1/8 to 1/4" above the black base for the fiberbuilt. I use a grey (70mm)or tallest tee for driver and a yellow or blue(25mm?)tee for the 3wood off the fairway and a red (40mm?)one off the tee box. I also use a yellow one for putting ( I dont use the putting sensor). Tee holder is touching the floor so I don't have to worry about pushing it through. I got the tee holders off ebay many years ago when I had the optishot. They are purple and last much longer than the white ones. I had the same one in since I got it. I bought a 6 pack of them and have 4 left. I burned up the one that came with my optishot in about a month and the purple one lasted 2 years in there and is still good today and the one in my protee has lasted 2 years now and still going strong.

The club in the slot is an issue for me once in a great while but I try not to let it get to me. If it really messes up my back swing I just step off the ball and try again. A lot of my guys will set the ball in front of the hole on iron shots but I find I hit it short very often when I do that.

hmm- i never thought to put the ball in front of the tee for irons-- I wish they would have put more turf around the tee hole- there are clearly spots for the turf - Im getting better at picking it clean now- but any bit of fatness and i lose alot of distance- -im going to give that a try -- interesting.
I first bought some of those 4 yards more- tees but when my friends played they broke 3 of em- and frankly theyre jjust too expensive- so i bought a box of these other tees epoch -plastic- they have nubs where it sits your ball up quite nicely- a bit long but I clipped em shorter and so far they work great...
and I have enough to last for years,

The short red 4 more yards tees do break, but I've found that if I cut about 1/4" off the ends, they don't break anymore. The clear plastic part will still break eventually but not as fast as before.
