I've read a bunch of the threads here and read numerous opinions about the Optoma and BenQ projectors, all around $800 US or less. Are there other short throw projectors out there that would produce a much brighter picture with better colors? I'm willing to spend up to $2500 if there is a projector that would show a significant improvement over my current BenQ 1085st.

I realize that this is an old thread but I’ll give it a try anyway. I’m building a golf simulator set up in my garage i’m looking for a 16:10 projector that has the right throw ratio to project onto an 8’ X 12.5’ screen. The projector will only be used for golf simulation and possibly other gaming, but no movies. I’m planning to hit balls from about 10 feet from the screen, but the distance is somewhat flexible.
I have looked at tons of projectors, but the throw ratio has been the main limiting factor. Most of the 16:10 projectors under $2k have lenses with a throw ratios that would require the projectors to be mounted about 16 to 18 feet from the screen to project a 16:10 image at 7.8’ X 12.5’ or 7.5’ to 12’ and I’m worried that this would caused shadows as my club passes thru the image during my swing 5 to 8 feet in front the the where the projector would be mounted.
The short throw and ultra short throw 16:10 projectors that I found under $2000 have very limited or no zoom and as a result they would have to be mounted a max of 3 to 4 feet from the screen, so they wouldn’t work because they would at risk of getting hit by balls.
So I narrowed it down to the following two WUXGA native 16:10 (1920 X 1200) projectors that I think will work for my set up:
Panasonic PT-VZ580:

-16,000 to 1 contrast (hard to compare between different manufacturers, because they all measure this differently)

BenQ SU922:
-DLP
-$1,460
-5,000 lumens
-12’10” to 13’5” mounting distance for 12 to 12.5 foot wide 16:10 image
-3,000 to 1 contrast
-1.6 to 1 manual zoom
-Keystone correction up to 30% horizontal, vertical, and corner
-Curved screen correction
-Verrtical lens shift +2.5%
-Projection offset 102.5%
-Geometric correction
-2,000 hour lamp life at normal setting
Both projectors have a throw ratio such that they could be mounted as close as 13 feet. The BenQ can be mounted 3 inches closer but that won’t make any different.
So so for those who have either of these projectors, if I’m hitting 3 feet in front of the projector will I get any shadows? My ceiling is 9’4” and I assume that once I mount it, the center of the lens will be around 7.5 to 8 feet from the ground. I’m 6’ tall and I’ll be elevated a few inches when I’m hitting from my mat.
So the way I see it, the only major differences are that the BenQ is DLP and the Panasonic is 3LCD. Each technology has advantages and disadvantages and I’m really not sure which is best for a golf simulator.
Assuming that both of these projectors will work for me and not cause shadows when mounted 13 feet from the screws. with me hitting at 10 feet from the screen, which of these projectors would you recommend?
Are there any major advantages of DLP over 3LCD or vice verse when used for golf sim?

Are there any short throw 1080p projectors that I can mount on the floor about 5-6ft from the screen? My garage is a smaller space and the current projector I have doesn't give off the best picture. I guess I could probably use a better computer also, but wanted to also get a better projector.
