  • Projector for new build

    Hi All

Newb with newb question (sorry in advance).

Im building a sim with a screen size of 11 x 8. This appears to mean an xga 4:3 protector. However, I think I would prefer native wxga (1280x800) in 16:10 format.

Could anyone who has tried both resolutions confirm that wxga would be the better option?

(Am I missing a better option?)

    I’m UK based.

    Thanks!

I was hoping to get some input, but perhaps my question was too vague? Sorry I’m new to all of this.

I’ve done a bit of research and think either the Benq TH671ST or TH682ST is my best bet.

I am definitely not an expert and just posted a question to the group myself but I have done a fair amount of research and read a lot of posts.

I have a similar size screen and I also think the 16:10 format would be best. You don't get the maximum height that you do with the 4:3 but its wider and better immersion feeling in my opinion.

The best 16:10 resolution I believe is WUXGA which is 1920x1200 resolution. The next best for 16x10 I believe is WXGA which is 1280x800 resolution. I think both are excellent resolutions so can't go wrong.

The TH671ST and TH682ST both have a native 16:9 aspect ratio so may not be the one you are looking for if you want a native 16x10 aspect ratio. I like the 16x10 because it gives you more height for the same amount of width.

A comparable projectors to the ones you listed would be the Benq MW632ST which is a 16:10 native aspect ratio projector in that price range. It's a WXGA 1280x800. I have heard good things re: this one and it has slightly more lumens than the 2 you mentioned.

      Good luck!

        Thanks for the comment.

I saw saw this post and it made me think:

I wouldn't be too concerned about a projector not having a 16:10 mode - I have a 2150ST which doesn't have a 16:10 mode, but I'm throwing up a 16:10 image without stretching or losing any game info off screen - I just toss 100 pixels away off each side and configure JNPG to run at 1720x1080 instead of 1920x1080. Much better resolution than the MW632ST's native 16:10 resolution of 1280x800.

I think the 671 is brighter than the 2150, hence my thinking that it might provide the best all round option?

I have the Benq MW632ST, 16:10 is awesome for filling up the screen, 720P (or 1280X800) leaves a little to be desired. IMHO, if you can spend a little extra, 1080 is worth it !! 2150st or the Optoma 1080darbee. Or if you need the extra lumens and can fit it, the Panasonic PT-VZ580U might be worth a look.

Why are you going with 11 x 8 as your screen size? That a major limitation on what is possible with these days projectors. Plus shorter irons will miss the top of the screen altogether.

Hi - my screen size is determined by the room it’s going into - a garden room 3.7m wide with a vaulted apex roof just shy of 4m, but both side walls are 2.5m to the eaves (room is 8m deep). I think an 8ft high impact screen will be fine for me. I’ve seen plenty for sale with that height dimension.

Back to my projector dilemma: Im going to pull the trigger on the th671st.
