  • 4K Projector Options - likely need short throw

I am considering upgrading my projector to 4K to support FSX2018 4K resolution. My current projector is roughly 10’ 4” from the screen and have to run in 4x3 aspect ratio. My screen width will be @10’ tall and 11’ wide. I have found some reasonably priced projectors, but they all need to be further from the screen to get to the screen size.

    Optoma 4K550ST.

The new Optoma 4K550ST, with a robust 4,500 lumens, is the lowest-cost short-throw, 4K projector in its brightness class. Here's our hands-on test report.

aja. Anyone have any experience with this projector? I'm thinking of getting into the 4k game now that TGC 2019 was released. I have a 168" diagonal and hit from about 9' so I'm thinking that 4k will make a huge difference. You can visibly see the pixelation at that size and distance with my BenQ 2150ST.

My whole sim setup cost a little bit more that the price of this projector. I don't think there have been very many (or any) Forum members who have opted for this. It's early days for 4K in my view.

The projector that aja mentioned is one of the few short throw 4K projectors currently out. Good news this was $5500 when first released. Already down to $4K is a good sign.

Thanks. Anyone currently using 4K for their golf sim? Does it make a significant difference in picture quality?

Any other 4k short throws out there? Room is going to double for a home theatre.... not sure if 4 k is worth it for the sim.

If the screen is less than 10 feet wide going for Native 4K maybe okay. Above 10 ft I feel there's going to be a foot Lambert shortage because of the lack of lumens that you get on the 4K native projectors on the market. The gain of the screen is 1.0 from Par2Pro the SQ. That's why I went for pseudo 4K past fall. Brightness and contrast ratio are key, due to that impact screen blanching everything. A better screen gain if it's out there would be useful.

I wanted native 4K bad but my estimation in October 2018 was that it was two years out to get enough lumens in a native 4K machine 2020 probably at the earliest for screens above 10 ft. lumens are still King

I bought optoma uhd51alv. It does 4k, 3d, and with 3000lumen. I bought this one because I want to use it for the golf simulator, home theater, and ps4 games. 4k movies are crisp and clear with HDR capability, my computer still has an old graphic card, so the simulator resolution is only 1080p. I'll update once I get rtx2070 graphic card for 4k resolution, but for now everything works like how I imagined.

I am not sure if that projector will work for me. It looks great but I am looking to have an image of 14x9 from no more than 14 feet. I am thinking that with this projector , I would have to be about 19 feet away. My current Projector is 19 feet away and I was looking to improve that if the cost is not too great.

I will also be using the room for home theatre.... I don't think that TGC needs 4 k, but it would be nice to have for watching sports. I am running a RTX 2080 so I am good on that front.

Did you ever get a 2070 card?

About to pull the trigger on Optoma 4k550st, looks perfect for 10 foot throw against 13 by 8 Carl’s premium screen for simulator and movie theater combined use. Any thought guts much appreciated.

Did you get the projector? I tried but have been told its been discontinued. Very surprising considering it has only recently been released. Seems like companies are really focusing on ultra short throw projectors which wont work for us.
