    Define the following

    1. Projected image dimensions and aspect ratio

    2. Projector distance to screen (or expected range) : this defines the lens

    3. Expectations for brightness (Is there ambient light in the room or only controlled spot lights in a dark room): see 5 below.

    4. Laser or lamp based light source? Lamp will cost less, but will reduce light output within a few hundred hours and doesn't like on/off functionality like a laser.

    5. Budget. It's like buying a boat/tractor/widget when you have never bought one before. You shop and then act like you know the price range you think is reasonable, but then complain until you buy another boat that can actually have useful duty. $1000-$10,000.

    A. If you know 1,2,3 then call someone like audio general dot com .(AGI) The guy was extremely informative, double checked my math and choices, and also is the source for several online golf simulator outfitters. They know the purpose and can recommend known projectors for this duty.

Read my signature for an idea. Epson "large venue" projectors still use the same lenses on their new models too. If you want around 50 ftL (foot Lamberts) you will need 7000-8000 lumens for a 14' wide screen. 50 ftL give you enough image brightness in a room with ambient light, but without direct external light on the screen.

A 5000 lumen Benq lk953st is probably $5k. (I haven't formally shopped) That would make about 40ftL on a 14' wide screen, and the .85 throw ratio would mount the projector at 12' from the screen.

Seriously, if you are shopping for this level of projector, call and get formal quotes. That $5k msrp projector may be quoted under $4k. My epson was way below projector central prices. AGI has a factory refurb Epson L1300U available (laser, 2160p, 8000 lumens) for around $4k. I really like the brightness on mine.

I agree with will , once you know your specs and budget call a pro, I used the projector ppl .com donna also knew projectors and had a handle on the sim world. She worked with me figuring numbers , lumens , sizes and placement for a good while, then recommended a unit that worked great , was on sale , tossed in a 100 .00 bracket and 100 percent money back guarantee even if I opened it set it up and tried it without damaging it .

Yeah I second calling Projector People. You are also in a world now that there will be trade-offs regarding Lumens vs 4K processing and Price. My go to for True 4K is a SonyVPL-295ES but that is aimed at a theater environment. I've seen this projector in a nice theater room and the image was unreal. You are goin to need a lumen output much higher than its rated 1,500. I'd be curious as to how that Epson L1300UNL performs. Sounds like a winning combination for a simulator.
