  • Watch this! Projector selection/screen sizing/setup/resolution matching

I just mounted my GT1080HDR yesterday. Sadly I mounted it to close to the screen and wasn't able to utilize all of my 16' x 9' Stealth screen from Par2Pro. Then I stumbled across this gold on YouTube and thought I would share.

It covers so many questions on this projector forum.

I purchased a Supertex 9'x9' screen. So is this video telling me that I can fill up this 9'x9' screen with my projector by adjusting the display settings on my desktop? I am hoping that this is the case. Skytrak is coming this week and I don't have the desktop yet.

Yes, but I'm curious as to what the quality of the image will be using 1080x1080. You'll be going from 1920 horizontal pixels down to only 1080 but still filling the same amount of screen space so I'm not sure how good it would look(?). Also, If I were to try it, I would have to back up my projector quite a bit to reach the screen height (I have the same 9x9 supertex as you) and the more you back it up to fill the height the less bright it will be. I'm curious to try it but mounting the projector is such a pain in the butt. Let me know if you try it and how it looks.

Here is my 16’ x 9’ Stealth screen from Par2pro using the methods in the video to perfectly fill the screen with my Optoma GT1080HDR. The screen is not 16’ it is actually 15.25’ Wide.
I used 1830 x 1080 for my graphics card setting and in TGC 2019. Very happy with the results.

I'm really glad I watched this video. Thanks for sharing ParPlus2!

Here I was thinking I was stuck at 16:9 or 4:3 when my biggest screen could be realized with a 6:5 ratio. Would someone please confirm I'll be able to do a ratio like that (6:5) in FSX software when running a similarly fancy NVIDIA graphics card (like RTX 2070)?

You should have no problem customizing a resolution in the Nvidia graphics card control panel. I've never used FSX, but when I customized a resolution in Nvidia that resolution then showed up as an option in TGC. I imagine it will work in a similar way for FSX.

I am the author of the post that you referenced up above, and I'm actually now starting to second guess it. I've played a few more rounds since I made the change and after playing some different courses -- especially ones that I tend to play more often and know well -- I'm starting to wonder if the image quality didn't actually take a hit.

For one, the quality is very noticeable with any and all text. So if it's suffering there, it would have to be suffering everywhere.

Second, when I was using it at 16:9 I had 1080 vertical pixels that stretched across 61 inches of screen height. In this 1:1 aspect ratio that fills the whole screen, I now have 1080 pixels that stretch across 108 inches of screen height. In my mind, there's just no way that 1,080 pixels occupying 108 inches is going to be of the same quality as 1,080 pixels occupying only 61 inches of screen space. Same number of pixels, but one is being asked to stretch out to fill an additional 77% of screen space while the other can be condensed more tightly into a smaller space. Those can't be on an equal playing field in terms of quality.

In order to achieve the 108-inch height, I had to back up my projector a few feet. There weren't any more vertical pixels added. Still the same 1,080. So in order to get those 1,080 pixels to cover another 47 inches of screen space, they either had to blow up the size of the pixels or space them out more or a combination of both. Any of which would make the quality suffer.

I'm hoping that someone with a more in-depth knowledge of resolution and aspect ratios can chime in and either confirm my suspicion or tell me I'm wrong. But like I said, after playing a few more rounds -- and especially after playing some more familiar courses that I know what are supposed to look like -- I'm beginning to second guess myself about seeing no loss in quality. And that's making me question whether filling up more screen space is really worth it if it means sacrificing quality (to me at least; others will place more emphasis on the size of the image).

I played Sawgrass today in 1:1 and felt underwhelmed by the graphics. But I recall playing it a couple weeks ago in 16:9 and being blown away by it.

Also, on a related note, if my projector is 1920x1080 native, how can it project a 1600x1200 image if it only has 1080 vertical pixels at its disposal? If I force it into 4:3, am I actually only getting 1440x1080 (which is the biggest 4:3 ratio using 1080 vertical pixels)?

3on3putt I think I agree with you. Image quality has to suffer with more screen height and same # pixels. I am going to check it out tomorrow with my benq671 st. Mounted at 12’ from screen. 12x 9’ 4:3 image. I also have set my resolution to 1600 x 1200. I tried to set height to 1080 vertical but Nvidia said projector did not do that resolution. But it took 1200. Strange. GungHoGolf. Can u explain? Thanks
