  • Xiaomi 4k laser projector

    Hi folks,

I'm still looking for a projector for my new garage sim. I have a screen in a 4:3 ratio with approx 400cm (w) x 300cm (h). Thinking about the Optoma 1080st and the Infocus in138hdst, but I accidentally just read about the Xiaomi 4K laser projector. It gets lovely reviews and is very affordable (+/- €1400 at Banggood).

I did some research, but it's not at Projector Central yet. The manufacture specs says that the screen size can be up to 150inch, but mine is almost 190inch. Will I be better of with a Optoma or Infocus projector?

Need the model number of the Xiaomi to find it and check the specs. If it's another one of their ultra-short throws, like the Mi model, it won't work for golf. Make sure the throw ratio is between 0.5 and 1.1 for golf sim suitability.

That's a UST projector and would sit 18" from the screen.

Typically, you're going to have a bad time making a golf sim setup with a UST projector.
It's right in a zone where you'll likely hit the projector.

Go with a short throw projector.

My go-to projector is the Optoma GT1080HDR, which retails for $800 and would fill that screen from less than 3M away.

Try that projector in projector central. I think you will be pleased.

I agree that this is likely not the right projector, but at 18 feet back, how is it in a zone where it will be hit?

(sorry, edited as the units confusion was answered below)

All the laser projectors I have seen are ultra short throw. I don't think there is anyway to cover them from being hit by balls and allow them to project an image? The Optoma 1080 has been great for me. My only problem is it isn't 4k. Its still a very good picture and it fills up my 200" screen at 9 feet. It has low lag also.

Dax - check the units 😎 I believe that ultra short throw may be sitting 18 inches back - not 18 feet. They are cool for a mantle but not so much for a golf sim.

If floor mounted and in a protective shroud, UST’s should be fine no?

You'd have to consider what might happen if you worm-burned one into the back of the case. The projector might hold up okay, but your face could be a different story. Maybe if it was very low profile, but I'd be hesitant if it were sticking up more than a couple inches.
