  • 4k on square image (almost)

My screen will be about 10 high and 11 feet wide, so very close to 1:1 ratio. I know you can use custom settings to do 1080 by 1080, would a 4k resolution be possible with this ratio?

I spent about $1,500 on a laptop and projector (671st) and I'm trying to decide if I want to return both and spend more to go 4k.

    Thank you in advance!

    Yeah it’s setup the same way. For example I use a 4:3 resolution at 1440x1080 instead of 16:9 1920x1080. A 4K UHD is 16:9 3840x2160.

    Simple math time…4:3=4/3=1.33
Multiple your base height resolution (should be the maximum the projector offers) by 1.33
1080x1.33=1436.36 I use 1440 because it gives just a bit more width to fill the screen.
    Same applies to 2160x1.33=2872.8
    2874x2160 is your 4:3 4K resolution.
You can add or subtract from you first number to change the width.

The beauty behind using a custom resolution is no stretching or narrowing of the image. You're just chopping off the edges.

Good summary. What if the screen aspect ratio is not 4:3. What if it's like a 12x8, 1.5 aspect ratio. So multiply 1080x1.5? 1620 horizontal. So custom resolution if 1620x1080 will fill the screen with no distortion?

Yeah, it's the same math. What I like to do is set the projector distance so the height of the image is perfect and just play with the width until you get it where you want it by reducing the first number.

As long as you don't change 1080 it will never shrink or stretch the image. Remember to never change the aspect ratio in the projector menu settings. Most people think you have to change the resolution and the projectors in-menu aspect ratio but that's not correct. Leave the projector at 16:9 and just create a custom resolution.

What I said doesn't sound right. A 1440x1080 stretched to 1620x1080 has to have distortion. Correct? Distortion free would have to be 1620x1215. Which is more than HD projector can handle. Confused

You are not stretching the 1440x1080 image to 1620x1080 if the original image 1920x1080. You are only adding or reducing the width or the field of view.

See the attached picture as a visual reference. The blue highlighted area represents what reducing the first number is doing. We are only chopping the field of view and not stretching or narrowing the image.

When chopping the sides, do you lose the text on the sides from the game? The image appears to move the text inward and just chop the background image, is that correct?

            You do not lose text.

Correct, everything shifts and is exactly how it would appear on a 16:9 just less field of view.

My Epson 1060 doesn't have an option to set aspect ratio to 16:9. Not trying to hijack the thread but can someone look at my options in the link and clarify what I should set in the projector for aspect ratio?

Sorry for the late reply. I ran across this trying to help another user. Did you get it figured out? I clicked on your link but the pictures are not loaded to your album anymore.

Can't view your image, but there's no need to set an aspect ratio in your projector. Leave it set to "auto" resolution if that's an option, or just ignore. Use the math above to figure out your horizontal pixels (vertical will remain at 1080), then create a Custom Resolution at X,XXX by 1,080 using Nvidia Control Panel on your computer and Apply it (or go to Windows Display settings and select the new resolution. You should see it immediately take effect on the projected image.
