  • Ceiling Height Issues

I have a bit of an awkward space in which I have started my simulator build and was wondering if anyone more well versed in projectors could possibly help out. I have built a 16' x 9' enclosure/screen in a room with 10' ceilings. I have a room length of 13'6". The complicating factor is due to an air vent the ceiling drops to 8' approximately 10' out from the screen. I have 10" between the top of the screen and ceiling. I have interest in the Optoma GT1090HDR but what I did not anticipate (poor planning) was the 16" needed above the screen with an 8' throw for a picture size of 220". It seems that something like the BenQ LK936ST with a lens shift would work but that is a bit more than I was hoping to spend. I was obviously hoping to utilize the entire screen but if I do proceed with the Optoma it seems that may not be possible. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for work-arounds (Keystone correction, etc)??? Thank you!

I have a similar situation with a roof slant. I actually put in an order for the GT1090HDR this morning because there's nothing else comparable. It will be tight, but if I can't get it to work my backup solution is to place the projector on the floor and use a small amount of horizontal and possibly even vertical keystone correction. I'd be curious to know if this works for you.

Also this calculator has been helpful https://www.optoma.com/projectioncal...name=GT1090HDR

Thanks for the response. I certainly wouldn't mind placing it on the ground my concern is that if I am viewing the calculators correctly with the projector on the floor the image will be shifted upwards ~16 inches since the screen for a simulator comes so close to the ground. I guess as apposed to a home theatre which would typically be raised off the ground..... I was concerned that making up that 16" would be quite distorting with keystone correction, if it is even possible.

Not sure if this will help you out at all or not but a while back I did very detailed 3 part review of projectors and and in particular a comparison of the 2 I was considering at the time.
The feature I wanted to point out was the zoom feature. I'm not sure if I fully understand the issue you are faced with but thought maybe the zoom feature would be of help to you. I know it was huge for me! Anyway hopefully it helps you out?

If you are anything like me you had no idea what you were getting yourself involved with when embarking on building a DIY golf home simulator! This is not to say I am full of regrets. It’s simply to say that the number of different elements of a golf home simulator (sim) build that one needs to become at least familiar with

Thank you for the information! This was very helpful. It makes me wonder if you were having the same issue that I am concerned about. When I run the numbers on projectorcentral.com it looks like the InFocus projector ideally would be 33" above the screen which given your ceiling height (Like mine) made focusing it difficult after all of the adjustments that were made. The BenQ looks to need to be 5" above the screen. Hence maybe the better picture??? I am glad to see it can be done with a little adjusting and unfortunately I think it will need to be a little trial and error on my part to see how much the picture gets distorted. Thanks again!

benq671 it provided a better brighter picture side x side against the GT and the offset is 3' below top of image. The offset on the GT was tough with a 9' 9" cieling 14+ above screen

We install lots of TH671ST units with 16x9' screens. Plenty of lumens (3,000) as long as room ambient light is controlled. The 4K TK700STi has the same lumens, and you can see how good it looks in a good room here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqbzCeNNTA4.

BenQ is very conservative with their lumen ratings.

I guess Projector Central is wrong in estimating 7fL. Can their estimates be trusted? Is there a better website that we should be using?

No, you shouldn't trust Projector Centrals fL recommendations - only their throw calculations. Trust folks who have installed hundreds of projectors for golf sim use.
