  • Need help with Projector decisions

    Hello everyone.

My home build is coming together. Here are my last decisions:
    1. Where to place the projector
    2. What projector and mounting mechanism to purchase.
Here are the details of my set up so far.
    • Cieling height is approx 105". Vertical clearance is a concern if the projector is mounted on the cieling. I am not sure how it will feel if I place the projector directly above the hitting zone. I plan on taping a cardboard box to the ceiling to get a feel.
    • Hitting zone is ~6" to the right of center. I could get closer to center but I would need to relocate my putting green.
    • Using Carl's DIY enclosure 8 x 10.5 with about 12 feet between the screen and the hitting zone.

Originally, I was considering the BenQ TH671ST based on feedback here. The projector central calculator says the max throw distance for my screen size is 11' 2" which would put it a bit in front of the hitting zone. Is that going to be a problem?

Because the hitting zone is offset, do I need to limit my search to projectors with horizontal keystone or lens shift?

I could ground mount the projector but those options seem really bulky and seem like they'd get in the way.

Any other thoughts, feedback, suggestions or options I am not considering? How do I go about making this crucial decision?

My projector is a little in front of my hitting area, which is about 12'0 from the screen, and it is not a problem. It is about 8'2 or so from the ground and 7'6 from the screen. I am 6'4 and none of my clubs come near it. My only concern is if I try to hit a crazy flop shot that I would have a chance of hitting it. I just don't do that. A ricochet is always possible. I'm not sure what you mean about "max" throw distance. The projector needs to be mounted the correct distance and height from the screen from to fill the image properly. There are plenty of mounting devices available on Amazon. I have a long "stem" mount because my garage ceiling is 12'0. I have a Carls DIY Enclosure. It is 8'6 high x 10'0 wide. It's great.
My projector is an Optoma GT1090 HDR. It is awesome in any light. I don't like golfing in a cave.

You are going to want to play with the projector calculator.

Each projector has a suitable range where it can be used. The distance from the screen will be the element that controls image size/screen.

You cannot just make any projector work from any distance. They are built with specific ratios for Distance / Screen Size.

Did you end up goin with the BenQ TH671ST Projector? I have the same ceiling height and went with the same size enclosure from Carl's. My concern is that it would not be bright enough from the throwing distance, which is around 10ft according to projector central.

Funny you should ask... I didn't end up moving forward and then got stuck with other priorities. I want to complete the build by Thanksgiving when I have family visiting. My plan is to buy the TH671ST and figure it out from there.
      Working...
