Benq W1500, screen 14'X8', mostly enough, trouble free after 15mo. Not enough in broad day light without curtains. Need to dim the room for movies. Great price point, but would get more lumen if I were to do it again, mainly to dim the room less for movies.

I have the 1080st as well and project an approximate 12 foot image. It is good , but I would highly recommend controlling the amount of light in your room as for me I would say it is the bare min. If you can get the most lumens you can get.

4800 lumens
What I have with protee and tgc. 13'9 x 9'6. It has about 8" at top without picture.
Its real bright in my room and picture is primo. Happy I spent a bit more than what I originally planed (about double)
Menu functions and getting screen adjusted took a while to figure out but it was all greek to me in the first place.

Benq ht1085st on 12x8 screen and it's far brighter than the optoma gt1080 than I started with even though the lumen spec is 800 less. Be careful with just looking at lumens....they may achieve that with a poor washed out image.

I really like the benq image quality. There is no comparison to the optoma as the benq is superior in color, brightness and quality.

With respect to Lumens ratings, you have to take into account the mounting position of the projector. I compared the Panasonic mentioned in an earlier post with my projector. The Panasonic lists as a 4800 lumens projector vs. my projector which specs at 3200 lumens. The projector central calculator shows that I get 50 nits of image brightness vs. 46 nits for the Panasonic which is slightly less. My projector is Short throw and only 2.3 meters from the screen vs. 6.1 meters for the Panasonic.

The comparison is based on the same size screen image.

If you have something that can be measured, then it doesn't make sense to ask people for anecdotal responses to 'how bright is your projector?'

In hindsight I wish I would have bought a projector that is more suited for golf than for movies. My room is dual purpose. I bought a Panasonic PT AE 4000 1600 lumens 100000/1 contrast ratio. Great for movies, not the best for golf. I can black out all light and have cones around my system light to prevent light hitting the screen. My screen is 13 x 8' 9". Image quality is fantastic but it requires the room to be darker than most other projectors.

Is 20 lumens enough in a fully light controlled room?

Most of the time I'll be able to have very little ambient light.

I wanted to compare how many ft lumens people who said their pj was very bright were getting.

I did the calculation in Projector Central and your number of 20 foot Lamberts (fL) is optomistic if only for the reason that you are looking at the number for Data/Text and not Video/Games where the image is more saturated and thus darker. My Projector Central showed 10 foot lamberts for your set-up which is pretty dim.

I re-worked my current projector calculation to show foot Lamberts and it comes in at the equivalent of 14 foot Lamberts. I would rate it's brightness as <adequate> with the ambient light from my ProTee sensor lighting.

If you have access to a big box store with a generous return policy, I'd suggest buying a projector and trying it out. If it's not up to snuff return it and try another model.

I think we all think the same in respect of this issue. We have to recall most projectors are made for either presentations or for home theatre, in particular the ones that we would like which produce a quality image. The issue then becomes that home theatre projectors do not typically need a lot of lumens because they will be used in a light controlled room and if they are not, then the set up would include a screen to compensate for the less than ideal viewing environment. For a golf sim the issue is made more problematic in that the screens do not reflect as much light as what a typical theatre projection screen will reflect.

Good idea. I wish there were a more short throws with high lumens.
