This may end up being fairly long as I think it documents some of the shortcomings (at least in my view) of the various software for folks considering the device and I'm hoping some of you that seem to have direct contact with Flightscope may have some luck passing on feedback if you agree. I'll admit that with two young kids and only an hour at a time it's possible I just haven't figured these software options out fully yet but I've played around with each enough I should have stumbled on most of the settings.
A bit of background:
- This is not a gripe about playing sim rounds, I think it's great a small E6 subscription was included but I'm talking about as a pure practice device
- I had a SkyTrak for 2 years and I am not missing anything hardware related at all, Mevo+ setup is miles easier and more accurate (my setup is non-permanent), and my data is good except the occasional very low spin shot that is an obvious misread
- I have an iPhone 11 and a good gaming laptop, previously I ran SkyTrak app on my gaming laptop viewing on the built in screen. I borrowed an iPad to test a few things but don't own one.
- While I felt there was some hardware limitations with SkyTrak I felt their driving range app was great for a consumer device. I find even a combination of all my Mevo+ options aren't living up to that one app.
- I will buy one of a new iPad or a decent sized TV to put near my hitting area if I find the right fit of the available apps. The iPhone screen is too small except at the range.
TGC 2019
- I think it's great sim software but I've never felt it was a great driving range
- As a plus it runs on my laptop so the screen size is decent
- But it lacks a user friendly way to look at groups of shots, dispersion analysis, randomized targets etc. Admittedly I haven't tried to record data and export but I'd like something I can do during the session not just after on my computer.
- I can be convinced otherwise but so far I see the range features here as more of a warmup tool before a round than a practice setup (that could change if the calculated club data is improved which I think I read was being worked on).
E6 Connect
- I haven't played with the sim software yet but I'm sure it does a fine job
- It's IOS only so I'm stuck on an iPhone which has a tiny display, I couldn't test this on the iPad as the license was linked to my phone but I'm not sure how much of an improvement the iPad screen would be
- The driving range has a popup of each shot with parameters but once that disappears the ones left at the top of the screen are only a subset. I don't want to have to analyze every shot in the after shot screen in detail but some key parameters I am focusing on aren't on the static always on screen.
- This feels similar to TGC in that its a fine warmup tool but not a practice tool
FS Golf
- I generally like the down the range view with the data parameters off to the side. However given it's an iPhone app the screen is small and I can't get all the key parameters on the screen at once. I'd like to not have to scroll around after each shot to see all the data as I prefer to glance at the device then hit another shot not pick it up and study it.
- The app does not appear to be native in iPad so using a bigger screen iPad simply zooms the iPhone version which means it's a bit bigger but there is no more information on the screen.
- This app is a bit more customizable in ordering the parameters so I can get most of those I want on the screen which is nice. If I use the simple view with just lines on a white background I can get all the parameters I want on the screen in portrait mode. You can't see the shot shape super well on the small screen but this is functional.
- This app lacks any sort of targets.
- The app in general feels like it's meant to be used outside when you see the ball flight and just want the numbers. I've used Trackman this way and it makes total sense but moving in to the consumer market with a lot of folks inside this app feels like it's not quite the right fit.
- I'm currently spending 90% of my time in this app but missing targets and wishing I had it on a bigger screen (but better using the bigger screen not just making everything bigger).
FS Skills
- Allows addition of targets but requires a fair bit of pre-setup. The randomizer function in SkyTrak is perfect in that you set a range of distances and it just cycles through shots. I haven't found a quick way to create this in FS Skills aside from making a huge list of targets myself then putting them on random order. Functional I suppose but not as easy to narrow down what you want to work on without a bunch of different setups.
- The data parameters at the bottom don't all fit on the screen so require scrolling which is annoying as I have to go pick up the phone after every shot. It also doesn't appear to be customizable to get the key ones on the screen and the less interesting ones hidden. I don't think all I want would fit on the screen at once but the default isn't setup to my liking.
- This does appear to be a native iPad app which means it fits the screen a bit better but it still lacks customization to make it show what you want.
- I don't think this is gathering data in a way that can be analyzed if you just setup a wide open drive then hit a bunch of shots (i.e., replace FS Golf with FS Skills as a pure driving range).
The current state seems disjointed in that I'm compromising pretty basic features no matter what I choose. I have four different sets of software and none really do what I want super well. It would be nice to have one app that could:
- Be customizable to get the key data parameters all on the screen at once (key parameters will differ by person) and still see a ball flight model somewhat visually appealing.
- Allow for targets to be used or not with a random feature without having to build "tests" but still allowing "tests" for when they are wanted.
- Proper export and summary of data into Excel (this may be coming once Myflightscope starts working).
- Have a PC and IOS (and Android even thought that doesn't impact me) version that looks/feels basically the same.
- It's an unfair way of saying it but I want to use my Mevo+ in the SkyTrak app. I would give Flightscope a pass as it's early days for Mevo+ but they have other high end launch monitors that aren't new so this is really more of a choice (or not seeing that a mainstream consumer market may have different needs than the high end pro that uses it for fitting or outside on the range).
I'm not sure how to proceed to make me enjoy the software as much as the hardware:
- Using just my iPhone with FS Golf or FS Skills is going to drive me insane except when I occasionally go to an outdoor driving range.
- I could buy a TV and still run off my iPhone mirrored to a tv but this way I still can't get more or different information on the screen.
- I could buy an iPad to get slightly bigger screen but then I'm hoping FS Golf gets a native app that is formatted better (there should be room on an iPad screen to show a ball flight model and all the key numbers).
- I could use my laptop but then I'm stuck with TGC as my only option for a range (or buying extra E6 subscription which to me also isn't the best range).
- None of the solutions seem great so I'm stuck as I don't want to spend a bunch of money on a tv or iPad and still feel like I have an incomplete solution.
I'm curious how others are finding the software options and whether you've just attached to one for practice or jump around between them depending what you are doing. To me they all feel half cooked at the moment and I miss the SkyTrak app.
