  • Radar hard on golf balls?

Anyone seeing this? One of the things I have been wondering is with radar system that requires a metallic dot on the ball, and that dot has to face in a specific direction each time, then we are continually hitting the golf ball on the same spot each time. This ProV1 was new and has not been used very much. I don’t have a hight swing speed at all. 95-98 driver. It must effect the integrity of the cover of the ball.

I cracked a lot of ProV1s when I used SkyTrak. I aligned the ProV1 stamp roughly at the unit perpendicular to the ground so I was hitting in one of two spots on opposite sides of the ball.

ive been using the 3 piece Kirkland balls in the sim for the last year and never cracked one. I find the spin close enough to ProV1 and they are way more durable. When they eventually get worn I throw them in my golf bag for winter golf or if I’m having an awful day and I’m tired of spraying expensive golf balls into hazards.

Kirkland. Is that a Costco ball?

Yeah. A few years ago they released a 4 piece ball based on some over run cores (speculation was they were TP5 extras if I recall). It was cheap but top quality. Sold out and they couldn’t keep making them due to no more access to the old cores (they also got sued by Titliest as well over this which I read settled out of court).

They now produce a lesser 3 piece ball with a urethane cover which I find is great for sim. It spins a bit too much off irons on the course for my liking but it’s super durable and you get two dozen for $30 Canadian.

Google ProV1 vs Kirkland and there’s lots of compare videos out there.

Or a bad cover on the ProV1??? Hopefully it's a rare occurrence and others hold up better

It must be a bad cover. It had maybe 70 shots on it and not all driver.

If you keep whacking the ball on the same spot it will crack sooner or later. This was evident in the old days with Vector Pro LM's that had to have a line on the ball facing the camera. I cracked a lot of balls of all models. Rotating the ball 180 so you hit on the opposite side helps some in that you are only whacking the same spot half the time.

I havent cracked a ProV yet, but several Chrome softs gave been cracked in my garage using Skytrak... I hear softer compression balls have a harder time indoors, due to the expansion contraction and then hitting a net and stopping in such a short duration.. but I'm not a physicist to confirm

Srixon are lasting quite a while, I really wear out the side of the ball opposite the metal dot... so I do rotate it around a bit, face the dot up or down, just so I dont hit the dot with the club and tear it off.

I find mine get worn too much before things get that bad. I cracked two in my early days, but have not had one crack in a while as I really try to remove them from service well before things get this bad. I just don't want the wear on my screen and take them out to the real course when they are removed from sim use.

I have a SkyTrak, non radar launch monitor and break balls fairly frequently. I sincerely doubt it's the radar. Common problem on sims.

Also doesn't hurt to give them a good looking over every few shots. I was practicing the other day and the club I was hitting was about 10-15 yards short on every carry. So, I adjust my swing, try a bunch of stuff, swing myself ragged, sweat like a pig,...... and then notice a crack in the ball.

Keep an eye out for scuffs and burrs on the cover, they will eat up a screen, particularly on high spin shots.

Aaaaah. Got you. I break mostly Srixon SoftFeels, I think since I always line up the logo in the same place is partially responsible. ON the other hand the logo is on both sides so it cuts beating one spot by half.
You did title the thread "Radar hard on golf balls" though, so you can understand my response. Cheers, have a good day.

trhuke, yes you are correct. Poor title now that I think about it. Lol. 🧐 Thanks for the input on the Srixon. I think I will Change to another ball brand but just not sure what to use.

I quite like the Srixon SoftFeels. Also, very easy on the budget. Quite a bit lower spin but good distance (for me, mid 80s driver speed because I'm short and old..)

My experience is that Pro V1 and Wilson breaks a lot compared to other brands. They are just fragile. I probably cracked more then a dozen the last 12 months or so.

Stopped using them and now only play Chrome Soft which is cheaper and more durable.

You're the first person I've heard call Chrome Softs durable. I'd say 90% of the broken ball pics I've seen over the years have been Chrome Softs.

I think they are at 75 or 80. They feel significantly softer though. Imo it is a really great ball for an affordable price.

Well they are close to indestructible for me, Titleist Pro V1 is not. It is not only me that think so.

I've never broken a ProV1 but I cycle mine out pretty often. It only takes a few full iron or wedge shots to gouge the cover enough that I wouldn't throw it at a screen anymore.

It's only important that the dot is on the target line axis of the ball, so to maximize ball life, place the ball with the dot straight up or straight down - this will at least distribute the strikes around the entire circumference of the ball. You could also replace the sticker after a period of time, making the new dot position 90 deg away from the old dot position.

GungHoGolf I will give that a try. I was facing it forward as that is what FS states in the manual.

Yep, aware that's their recommendation. Having it on top shouldn't matter - that's just a quarter revolution different, on the same axis. Pounding a ball on the exact same spot will make them fail / go short pretty fast.

That's true for most clubs but depending on how much room you have tee to screen, the placement can potentially be a bit more important on the driver due to the combination of higher ball speeds and lower spin.

And FWIW, I've seen a lot of Wilsons crack as well. But simulators in general are very hard on all balls.
