  • Mevo+ total distance / roll values

    Hi,

i am a new Mevo+ and FS App user before I was using a swing caddy SC300.
With FS Apps my ball carry distance is OK but the total distance is very very short compared to the SC300 or reality.

i read a roll around 7 yards for a carry of 170 and a dynamic loft around 16.
I changed the fairway setting to hard in the app but it doesn’t change or I can’t notice it.

    I have noticed similar issues.
I find carry distance on Mevo+ to be OK. Total distance can be short.
Compared with the Ass. Golf pro's Skytrack carry was v. similar total distances was short. This was outdoor mode on the range
Similarly the Mevo+ only recognises three types of club a Wood, Iron and a wedge, and adjusts the radar to read the expected flight path. These need to be set correctly
Check Altitude and weather settings. If using outdoors. Also check your numbers on the Flightscope Trajectory optimiser available at https://flightscope.com/products/trajectory-optimizer/
Most of this comes from the algorithm that Flightscope use. In outdoor mode the Mevo+ only reads 40 yards of distance then calculates the rest. Short indoor is only probably one revolution of a golf ball.

Different hardware manufacturers can all take the same data in and depending on how well the algorithm is written depends on the distance outputs etc.

Total distance is completely calculated, and can depend on several factors or other parameters in addition to the "Soft, Medium, Hard" ground settings. Many of these parameters are not available or measured/accurate on the SC300 so not surprising you are seeing differences. Carry number is far more important than total distance... as on course conditions can change with wind, moisture, grass length, fairway slope, elevation etc from a day to day or even shot to shot basis.

Backspin, peak height, angle of decent, slope of the ground, can all impact how much roll you get on the fairway or green. I don't believe any of these values are measured on the SC300. If your spin his higher, you'll get less roll... if you don't hit the ball very high, or have a shallow angle of decent, your ball may roll out more... etc..

Don't focus much on total distance in my opinion... it's a calculated number for all manufacturers, each of them calculate it differently, and its rarely indicative of on course conditions from day to day in my opinion. For example, in my case, I think Mevo gives me more roll out than I get on course sometimes... my course is always pretty soft... if your course is firm and fast, you'll see more roll perhaps... all relative to where you play... I'd not stress over it much.

You are right, I’m trying to use only carry now, which makes me too long these days with an extremely dry summer and new clubs. I must learn.

For me knowing my carry distances has helped immensely in my scoring. Knowing exactly how far you carry each club (along with a good range finder) makes a massive difference in strategy. You’re correct you need to adapt to roll out but club selection when I know my 7 iron flies 170-172 struck well and 160-165 with a reasonable miss gets pretty easy from any decent lie. It’s hard to “over pure” an iron from the fairway or a tee so it becomes very easy to pick that 7 iron when I know low 160s get me on the green and 172 doesn’t fly over the back as an example.

I'd ignore roll entirely when practicing on any launch monitor. It's a necessary evil during simulation to know what happens when ball hits the ground. However, this is the same as on the course. You must know your carry distance and adjust for course conditions on that day for how much roll out.

I've hit many balls on GC2, Trackman, SkyTrack and Mevo+ and all produce way more roll than I ever see on the course (I live in a wet climate). When I go on golf trips it always takes me a day or two to realize that the 20-30 yards of roll on my drive I see on the launch monitor can actually happen on a golf course or a short iron may actually bounce and roll out a bit.

If you want to focus on how a ball "could" interact with the ground then land angle is probably the most useful measure to me but I can't recall if Mevo+ outputs that in any of the software.

Exactly, nevertheless the gap between practicing and simulation confuse me because I didn’t expect that simulation could give me bad habits.

I must have serious practice sessions and sometime having fun with simulation which remains a video game and not a genuine tool to acquire automatisms for the courses.

      Really well stated, Tony!
