After reading these forums, it seemed like there was no great way to protect the HMT unit for a GC2. Yes, it breaks off if you hit a shank -- but my bigger concern was bouncebacks.
I ended up finding a guy on Etsy who had made a metal GC2 case and worked with him to build one for the HMT as well. Pics included below as well as a link if you're interested. It seems to protect it without interfering with the HMT's ability to read the club face.
