  • TGC face angle readings

    Hi all,

With TGC on ProTee, I've noticed that:

-the face angle readings only seem accurate when I hit balls into a net and have the horizon cam on

-vs. when I try to use it without hitting a ball, the face angle almost always shows up as about 5-7 degrees open (even when I am purposefully swinging with a completely shut face).

Has anyone else had this problem with strange club face readings (when not hitting a ball)? Perhaps the lesson is that I just can't use TGC on ProTee without a ball? I'm in an apartment with thin walls, where even hitting AlmostGolf balls at night won't work with my neighbors, so I'm hoping one of the experts here might have some insight.

    Thanks in advance!

    Best, James

I think that, unlike simpler systems like the Optishot which can be used without hitting a ball, the ProTee is designed to register what happens when a ball is struck. Take the ball out of the picture, so to speak, and that would probably account for the inaccurate readings.

I've never seen a post asking this question and I've been on this Forum for a while. I suspect the short answer is you have to hit golf balls in order to get reasonable readings.

Hopefully someone else will chime in.

Aja is correct. The ProTee has not been designed to be used without a ball. However, you can tweak the system to compensate for your open face using the advanced settings editor (ALT-E). If you also turn off the ball track so it will calculate ball speed based on clubhead speed you should be able to play without a ball...

Perfect, that makes sense. Thank you both!

If I were you id still try to hit a cotten ball or something. Swinging without something to hit in place usually ends up being different then your actual swing. Charles barkley is a prime example of that but Im sure we all do it to some extent. Having the ball there gives a little more pressure to the swing and you may make slightly different movements than you do with practice swings.

Thanks for your input- you're right, ive taped my swings with and without a ball, and the arm movement does seem to actually be a little different. I've since switched to using the ProTee system while hitting an AlmostGolf ball, and everything is definitely working much better.
