ProTee Base Pack 2 vs. GSA PX5

Hey guys,

+ I am in the process of building a house and want to add a golf simulator in the basement.
+ I am torn between the ProTee Basepack 2 and the GSA PX5 and would love some advice.
+ From an outsider perspective, the systems appear very similar.
+ The one item that appears different is that the GSA PX5 doesn't require you to hit from the exact same spot on every shot (sounds like you can hit from rough or sand)

I would really appreciate to hear if others were in this same dilemma and what made you choose one system or the other.

One thing to note, I'm left-handed and all of my buddies are right-handed, so need a system that can switch easily between LH/RH.

On the PX5, if you have rough and sand panels..... your club data will not work during the shots from those panels. That reduces the system to a CX2 for those shots. Putting is handled differently as well. I chose not to go with those panels because of the height difference. The PX5 requires you to hit on the center line to be accurate. You have a little bit of room to move the ball forward or back and inch or two, but that's about it. I believe that the ProTee system is similar in that regard. Both mats are made by fiberbuilt and are very durable. I believe that Gene replaced his with something different.

Thanks Keither - Would you say that using the GSA system in the CX2 mode is of little value?

My thought process is that during normal use, I wouldn't use the rough/sand panels, but thought it may be a fun way to play when having friends over for some competition. Thinking about how much time I actually spend in the rough though, using the system in CX2 mode may have diminishing returns.

Is there a better setup (around the same price point) that you'd recommend over the GSA and ProTee systems, keeping in mind that I need to switch between LH/RH play?

The CX2 is fun and allows you to play. But for game improvement..... that is a different story. For accurate ball flight, you need 2 out of 3 things. Club data, Spin, Ball data ( direction, speed, launch angle). The CX2 only has ball data. With accurate club data. SA can be calculated pretty well. SA will give you the shape of your shot. Without SA, the system doesn't know if it is a draw or a straight push. Once I added the PX mat to the CX2 system, it allowed me to work on shot shaping. Now I can move the ball in either direction......and when I get lazy or fatigued, and that dreaded big pull comes out...... it is accurately represented. As for a better setup than ProTee and GSA for the money....... I am not aware of any lefty/righty system that comes close to the same price.

I had the CX2 and upgraded to the PX5. Before the upgrade I had the sand and rough panels (the sand panel is the exact same as the rough panel, just with brown grass) and I rarely ever hit off of them. The games themselves "punish" you for the lie, so you are really double hurting yourself hitting off of those. I found them to be more of a hassle than anything.

Thanks Sturonek! Interesting perespective! So all else being equal, is the consensus that the ProTee is better, equivalent, or worse than the PX5?

I have played on both (a local country club as the Protee that I used frequently before I bought my sim) and I would say they are very equivalent. GSA is a component based company, so I went that route just in case I ever wanted to add a ball spin cam.

I can only add a couple of points. 1)Keither is correct that the Fiberbuilt mat is used on both systems and they are excellent mats. That said, I did replace my mat with s shorter, thinner mat that I believe is more realistic and gives me better feedback. and 2)I have never used GSA but it appears they are very similar in technology.

One other important note, I have always place the ball on my Protee mat about an inch or two in front of the designated spot. I think there is some flexibility on ball placement, as long as you are in line with the cameras. I love my protee system, so if you have any other questions, please let me know.
