  • Projector & Screen/Enclosure Size issue

I am struggling with Enclosure size and aspect ratio. I got an amazing deal on a BenQ LK953ST 4K 5000 lumen projector with a native aspect ratio of 16:9. The projector gets great reviews and the throw fits my room perfectly. I am trying to order an enclosure from Carl's and for my room, to maximize screen size, the 16:10, 9x14 is close to perfect. If I were to choose the 16:9 enclosure that fits width-wise, the enclosure drops to about 8'7'' and that is too short. Does anyone have any suggestions other than to just return the BenQ and get a 16:10 projector? More details:

    15'7'' of room width available
The finished ceiling height will be 9'10''

    Appreciate any feedback/suggestions very much.

It looks like image height will be 95 inches (so 8 feet). That leaves 12 inches of unused screen space, so 6 on top and 6 on bottom if you center it. That's really not a big deal in my opinion. I know some people feel differently. If you really wanted to fill the screen you can create a custom resolution with your graphics card to do so. Since you're only filling 12 inches and you have 4k to start with, the image quality shouldn't suffer much if any.

The bigger question though ...... that projector is designed to go with the lens pointed at the middle of the screen. How are you going to make that work for a sim? (In other words, it can't be placed on the ceiling above the screen unless you then tilted it down. Looks like it does have some vertical lens shift but is it enough? It has a small amount of horizontal lens shift you might be able to use).

Thank you for the reply. I guess this is why people just pay the big money and get one of the big companies to do the job. The weeks and days spent trying to piece this together and make it work have been extremely difficult. You are the first person to mention the issue of center mounting the projector. I won't know if it is an issue until the install is done, and by that time, it will be way too late to return the BenQ. What projector or projector feature should I be looking for? Using EYE XO so that will be center-mounted as well. Thank you again.

I think the LK953ST has 60% Vertical and 23% Horizontal shift. To be honest with you, I have no idea what that means...

Make sure you go to ProjectorCentral.com and enter in your projector info and room info (screen size etc.) Pay close attention to the offset and where your projector needs to be placed! Critical and one of the most important decisions you will make. I quickly entered in your data and it looks like the projector will likely be in your backswing if mounted on ceiling requiring about four feet mounting from the ceiling! I might be wrong, but make sure you pay attention to this.

We love the LK953ST. Folks get hung up on aspect ratio, trying to match 16:9 or 4:3, but as long as you have an Nvidia graphics card, it's simple to dial in a custom aspect ratio in Windows and perfectly match any screen size from 16:9 to 1:1 (square). For positioning purposes looking at a throw calculator, just use the vertical image height to maximize vertical pixels - then you'll customize the horizontal pixels to match your screen dimension.

Are you using vertical lens shift to ceiling mount it? Or horizontal shift to mount it on the side? I'm not sure of the math needed to determine lens shift positioning.

Hello Howard - I am hoping that this is not the case. We have some play with tee-screen length and the projector's lens shift. This is all very confusing to me!

Wow. With that amount of horizons/vert shift it looks like you could place the projector anywhere and get it to work! I think you are golden to go with the 16:10 enclosure and do like Gungho says and just adjust the horizontal to match. Place the projector as close to the ceiling middle of screen and adjust away. JMHO

ProjectorCentral gives a great example of how much lens shift it can do... humongous! One thing you should still take care with though is make sure you won't get shadows from where you stand and hit from since it looks like you need to place it close to ceiling behind you. Maybe you will also need to shift it off center out of the way and also use horizontal shift.

I don't what you paid for the 953 but BenQ has another 4k projector coming out soon (within the next couple weeks I believe). TK700STi. It retails at way less than the 953. It has a vertical offset of 9 inches and you have 10 inches between screen and ceiling so it will work for you (since your native 16:9 image wouldn't be reaching the top of the screen to begin with). Would mount 13'9'' away from the screen. Custom resolutions to fill screens typically require moving the projector back some, which in this case would be back to 15'8''. Can't say for sure if that would introduce your shadow to the mix or not but it's certainly pushing the limits with 9'10'' ceilings I would think.

I actually saw that one, however, the light in my room is decent, but going to be on the brighter side so the 3000 lumens turned me away from that one...
