  • Garage Golf Simulator

Please check out my Protee Garage Golf Simulator titled video on YouTube. It's a 5:20 video and shows how I constructed a fully operational system while still maintaining the use of my garage. This will be the first full off season of use so I'm looking forward to seeing how the system performs. I basically shut the system down during the golf season.

    Thanks,

    Mike Huskey

Nice setup, but dear god what are you running TGC on, a potato? That seriously looks like 1 fps. What are your system specs?

Nice looking install. Easy to store.

Have to agree about the performance of TGC. Major issues with that. Should be easy to fix though.

Nice setup on the foldaway system. Time to upgrade that computer!

1-What are you using for heat and air in the garage?

Do you have a hd graphics card in your computer?? You must have at least 2.8ghz and at least 4G of Ram and the HD graphics card to get rid of that skipping. I have 3.4ghz and 8G o RAM on a SSD desktop PC with the HD graphics card.. I found that desktops or a gaming computer works best. Better than a lap top. Not to say there are great laptops now that run the system great as well. But desktops are cheaper to build. Good luck

Impressive! very nicely put together high tech motorized fold away setup. Appeared like you tossed the club & looked disgusted at the end... probably at the 286 DOS PC you're running?

Pretty cool design. I had initially tried to have a portable setup, and while it did work, it ultimately didn't meet my needs. I wanted something I could quickly practice on, and some nights that may just be me going into the garage and hitting 20 - 30 balls really quick to stay fresh (I have a toddler and a wife which complicates matters).

Congrats though, it is a fun (and sometimes frustrating) endeavor!

Nicely executed. I went the other way with my setup... a fold up screen instead!

Funny guys the system operated much quicker earlier this year so I guess I need to do a software upgrade as I haven't played much on this since May? I purchased this system about 9 months ago from a dealer and the computer setup I was sold is the following:

Cybertron desktop PC, AMD FX -4300 quad processor, 3.8 Ghz, 8.00 GB Ram
                    19" Acer touchscreen
                    MSI 760GMA Motherboard X-Sniper 2
                    BenQ MS630ST projector

I am NOT a computer spec guy but wouldn't the dealer sell me the correct operating system to get the proper results out of this system? It seems to work fine for me but I'm not thrilled with the graphic quality when using TGC. Protee seems to work fine but maybe the upgrades I do will fix the slow run speed? ANY SUGGESTION APPRECIATED.

The lighting system was the most challenging as I decided to install my own track and heads not knowing how CRUCIAL the lamp type is for this system to work correctly. I ended up going back to the dealer who sold me 75w rated track heads with 90w halogen lamps. This isn't electrically safe (dealer told it's what he always sells) so I found a lower wattage lamp with the same beam angle online and the system seems to work correctly now. The system will never work correctly without the correct fixture placement and the correct lamps with the narrow beam angle, I can't tell you frustrating this was to finally work correctly.

My my only challenge right now is upgrading the TGC for an offset screen, my system is about a foot off center to the right to allow a little more room for right handed players. I didn't know this would cause ball flight problems but it does. This is supposed to be corrected this year? The other issue I have is the inability to "waggle". A small waggle starts the timers so if you go back a little and don't swing I'll get an error. I emailed Protee and went thru the settings but haven't ever fixed this issue. Putting has also been a challenge, so much that I simply turned it off with the auto 2-putt setting. I could never get a short putt under 5' to register? I would always have to take the club back further to get it to register so putting softly was too difficult. Don't get me wrong, I like the system and it works most of the time but for my $7K investment it seems a little troublesome. Hopefully this winter I'm able work the kinks out? I do not plan in buying a 4K putting sensor (or is it 2k) to be able to putt correctly.

For heat I installed a 5 kW 30 amp 240v electric heater in the corner of my 3-car garage. I also installed a 20 amp 240v receptacle in the other corner and plug in a small heater and set on floor, garage heats up in about 15 minutes and the I run intermittently as needed. I only heat the garage when I play golf so it's affordable. A natural gas system would be much more efficient but I didn't want the hassle of venting and gas line but will probably give in soon if I play more.

The one item that is important for TGC to run properly is the graphics card that is installed in your computer. You haven't quoted what that is. I suspect that it's part of the problem. TGC is graphics intensive and needs a fairly powerful graphics card.

Your processor is not very powerful... I am writing this on my desktop which is am Intel i3-3220 and it scores about the same as your computer. You need to get a more "gaming" spec computer with a faster processor and likely, much better graphics card.

The dealer hasn't sold you the right computer.

Look in the TGC part of the forum, there are articles at the top of the section that deal with the computer requirements. They should point you in the right direction.

As far as your complaint about not being able to waggle, that is a settings issue and you should contact ProTee support. They will set things straight for you. I have a ProTee sim and have never had any issue with not being able to waggle or double pump before hitting.

Now, the "upgrading the TGC for an offset screen" comment! Are you saying that you don't have TGC 3.0 installed? This version has the "offset" feature, but I must say that I don't see what you are implying when you say that not having this causes "ball flight problems" ???

I also have an offset system due to the size of the room. Had my ProTee for over two years and have never experienced ball flight issues due to the offset.

Any measurements made by the ProTee sensor are made relative to the direction that it is pointed. If you have offset the sensor, but then are hitting to the center of the screen, the sensor will be detecting that you are hitting at an angle (relative to the direction that the sensor is pointed). Just strike the ball aiming parallel to the sensor direction and the readings will reflect the ball strike. Just a guess, otherwise not sure what you are referring to and what could be the issue.

Remember that the image on the impact screen is only a representation of the "target" that you are aiming at. The actual target is an imaginary line that is parallel to the sensor pad's direction. Once you set the correct (image) offset in the TGC settings, your screen representation of the target will match up with where you sensor is pointing to. Then you can aim at the on screen target.

As far as getting the Putting Sensor, it is under 2K last I checked and works brilliantly. Putting off the regular sensor just doesn't cut it. Most who have the putting sensor will agree that it is worth the investment.

Get your system set up properly and you will use it more and enjoy it more.

                      Good luck!

I'll start with the graphics card from what I can tell Display 1 is a Nvidia GeForce GT 610, full display device, 5075 MB, current display is 1600 X 900 (32 bit). Thanks for the advice, I'll look at this more in the forum. I won't be happy if the dealer set me up with a weak operating system and probably have no recourse since I purchased in February.

Aja is right. The offset option is in TGC 3.

The putting sensors is under 1K:

Waggle should not be an issue. In advanced settings (ALT-E) find the line: Max_swing_tempo and make sure its set to 99. Save and restart the interface.
And make sure you have interface 3.07g installed: http://csc.protee-united.com/hc/en-u...-07g-available

I have recently upgraded my entire computer system (local computer shop) to the Protee minimum specs and what a difference it has made with the speed of operation and graphics on the TGC courses. I'm now using a Intell Core i7-6700 Processor and a NVIDIA GForce GTX1070 graphics card. I'm upset that Chip with Spectrum Golf wouldn't give me back a credit for the deficient system - he told me the system he sold me "was fine and the one he uses all the time" The system they sell is not to the Protee standards and the Portal will run Ok but the TGC will not. Please do your homework when purchasing. Spectrum sells a package deal and they don't give you the exact specs on what your buying or an exact parts list and it was my error in trusting they would build they system to the Protee and TGC requirements. Again, if your spending the $7k for a complete system, get the correct operating system and graphics card so you can FULLY enjoy your golf simulator experience.

Great news! ...but I think you should kick up more of a stink with your supplier. The PC he sold you was a mid range PC from 2012. A quick Google shows release dates for the CPU of October 2012, and even worse the graphics card was May 2012. That machine was never, and I mean NEVER going to run TGC at even acceptable frame rates.

Sounds like a cowboy to me, especially with his "I use the same one all the time". Stinks of something cow-like, brown and smelly to me.

Tell him you're going to post reviews of his system on here, send him the YouTube vid, post all over his Facebook feed, bad mouth him on trust pilot, etc. Basically, he sold you a lemon man - don't let him get away with it...
