  • Theater to Golf Sim Room Conversion with Pics

Long time lurker on this site. I guess this is version 2 of my sim room. Originally had a Net Return Home series net up so that I could hit balls sideways into the net but see the flight on the regular home theater screen. Worked great for a year, but eventually wanted to swing "at" my target. My room size is 13' 6" deep, 15' 6" wide and 10' 6" high.

Took down the net (looking to sell it now). Secured Carl's Premium 7x7 screen and built a custom EMT cage that fits exactly in the wall cutout of the media room (12 inches deep, 7"6" x 7'6" High and wide). Already had CCE mat that I cut to 3x4 to not take up too much space. My projector is Epson home cinema 1440 which throws 4400 lumens. I was able to increase screen size as much as possible for the wall cutout area which greatly increase my previous viewing screen size (running at 4:3). Some dead area at the bottom, but to lower pic to the floor would cause my shadow to show in the screen which I don't want (and I don't want to move projector). Walls are a dark brown so it creates a really good dark lighting in the room, but not great for pics (sorry). Unlike many, I prefer to hit pretty close to my screen (6 1/2 feet) as I find it minimizes the margin for error on mishits and is actually more immersive.

My contribution is offering a few sim room hacks in my search for automation and efficiency:

    1. CCE mat sliding on carpet. If you've ever used one of those clear plastic office mats that go under desk chairs with wheels to allow them to slide on carpet, I cut my CCE mat to lay on top of it and used double sided tape to stick CCE to desk chair mat I picked up at office depot. Problem solved. Hitting mat is stable and doesn't move at all.

    2. Ability to move Skytrak easily. I bought this (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y3MKC7C/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_l6P6Cb99TCP8P) and screwed the skytrak on it. Now, I can just use my club to gently slide the skytrak from side to side depending on whether I want to hit off tee or off the mat (agree with everyone that CCE is a bit punishing but haven't decided to change yet). See pic.

    3. Rebound and sound off screen. Carl's Premium screen is outstanding, but I wanted to ensure no rebounds and minimal impact sound. Behind my screen are (two) 3 inch memory foam mattress toppers (6 inches total). They are against the wall behind the screen secured with bungees and about and inch away from the screen itself (moving blanket between). Sound is amazing muffled and every shot just falls to floor in front.

Pics below. I have a CCE ball tray on it's way so I can rake balls onto mat easily.

Sweet setup man. Are you able to hit driver in there ? I have similar dimensions and am about to start my build.

Man I wouldn't want to be the caddie carrying that bag! Very nice set up!

Yes, I can swing driver in the room with no problem. The only thing I don't do is hit wedges beyond my pitching wedge (no gaps and no sand wedges) because I am not putting any netting up to catch any of those. I have TGC but don't really play it because I really spend most of my time on the Skytrak range and skills options to improve my swing.

Glad everyone likes the Mizuno bag. It's actually an old school Mizuno fitting cart from back when everything wasn't removable heads (and you needed to have 5 or 6 glued in 7 irons with different shafts to demo). It was truly a score as I happened to be on Craigslist looking for a Vintage Leather Staff bag or something and saw a guy had listed this. It was in his garage in mint condition and he needed to get rid of it. I couldn't give him money fast enough!

Looks great. Let me guess, that “bag” was less than $100? Sometimes you see some crazy things on CL.

                Question about your setup.
Where is the ball placement (between front and back of the room)? Curious where the ball is in relation to the screen.

                Thanks!

That is a super setup, the finish looks great and the Mizuno bag is just the business. Well done on a really professional looking build.

                      Wundej,

I think I paid $125 for it...I probably would have paid twice that just based on the uniqueness of the item. Lucky find.

My ball position is 6 1/2 feet from screen (that's where the telescopic rubber tee is). I can slide the skytrak back several inches to hit off the CCE mat. Total room dept is 13 1/2 feet so about center of room.

Curios about slider. How stable is the Skytrak on the slider. It looks like its attached with one screw. Does unit want to tip forward? How much space above the floor is the unit sitting whilst attached to slider? How wide is your slider? Looking to use a similar setup with a Fiberbuilt strip.

Richerod, I bought the exact slider i listed in my original post. You can see all the dimensions from the amazon link. See my comment right below this on connecting the two. Highly recommend!

Agreed on the slider! I've been looking for something like this for my setup. Great idea!!! Any details you can provide on stability and leveling would be much appreciated. You have a great setup there! Just hope you don't ever shank one! Thanks again for the informative post.

I didnt have to buy anything else to connect the skytrak to the camera slider. I pulled something off the bottom of the skytrak and one the big screws that comes with it bolts directly into the slider. Completely stable and i love how i can just use the grip end of my club to move the laser to different spot to prevent wearing out the same divot spot on the fiberbuilt. Cant recommend more strongly...
