Issues with Sound from Impact Screen

Good morning all,

I have been hitting into a net for some time, while I waited for all of the components of my simulator to come in. I never got any complaints from the Mrs. re: noise. I recently installed the enclosure with Direct from the Mill screen (thanks again Daniel). I'm very please with how it looks and performs, but I'm now getting some complaints from the wife about the noise of the ball hitting the screen. Our bedroom is right beside the garage. The screen is on the far side of the garage (not abutting the bedroom wall). I do not have the screen tight. Behind it, I've secured a white photography curtain as well as two moving blankets.

If I were to install memory foam behind the screen, would that absorb some of the sound? I've seen the foam sound insulation squares. Do people install those on the sides of the enclosure? Behind it? Is there a solution that I need to do on the actual wall?

Do you have a stand alone enclosure or is it built into the garage? I am planning my build and have considered a few different options.
- Green Glue (requires two layers of drywall/plywood)
- Carpet on walls
- Vant Panels (Style not brand, can make at home much cheaper)
- Archery Net behind screen (or mesh net, both have been said to help)
- Sound panel in garage (Towel method appears cheap and promising)

I am sure there are other options but I imagine they require drywall removal.

Thanks, Steston. I have a stand along enclosure made with 1" EMT. For vant panels, can you attach them on the sides of the enclosure, or would it only work to adhere them to walls?

I see no reason you couldnt make them work in a stand alone enclosure. It is essentially taking sheet of plywood and making them pretty using a staple gun, some foam and fabric. You would secure the plywood to the back corner and front corner of the enclosure.

After reading the FAQ's on the Green Glue site I wonder if anyone has attempted to adhere a carpet pad directly to the back of their impact screen. According to GG a carpet pad is the single most effective way to limit impact noise. They are referring to flooring not golf simulators but perhaps it is transferrable.

Any one try something like this sound 'barrier' board from Menards? I've got some exposed concrete blocks behind my screen and was thinking of glueing this to the blocks. The rest of the area is sheet rock.
Also, is it better if the whole area behind the screen is black or a dark color?

An old mattress against the screen worked wonders for me in reducing sound and eliminating complaints from the boss

You will find videos on YouTube that will let you compare Archery Screen to an Impact screen. I’ve decided that Archery netting is the best way to remove that ‘whack’ , ‘thump’ sound that drives me nuts when playing in a simulator... with the archery netting you will notice there is no ‘thump’ sound of the ball hitting the screen - it doesn’t make any sound when a golf ball hits archery netting!

That leaves you with only the sound of golf club/ball impact which is impossible to get rid of as it is the sound of golf in all environments. I won’t tolerate that thump, and my wife will be much happier not ever hearing it.

Does the archery netting go before or after the screen? If before doesn’t that impact the video.

I think people use archery netting instead of an impact screen. Assuming the picture isnt as good due to the small holes in the netting but from what i hear practically no sound. I guess it's a trade off from screen quality vs sound.

When I built my simulator , I started with 2 x archery screens mounted by bungees on all 4 sides directly on top of each other. It was silent . I wanted to start with something inexpensive to make sure that I had got the mechanical details right , such as noise , bounce back etc before investing in an HD type screen. I was happy with the archery weave, the screens I got were closely woven and having them doubled up meant that light bleed was reduced because the holes in the weave were not aligned. It was a good image but I was able to get in on the Mill screen and when that arrived I overlaid that over the 2 archery screens and it works perfectly , It is quiet and no bounce back as the archery screens support the HD screen.
To be frank the archery screens provide a good enough image for golf sim but the HD screens are an improvement.

What would be the best setup to put screen as close to the wall as possible? I’d like to have within 6 inches of wall. Was thinking the Carl premium screen? Would I need archery screens, comforter or memory foam behind it?

Bazooka Joe showed some great pics of how he hung a 3” memory foam using baseboard trim and lag bolts.

I did something similar. I think it makes some difference. It feels like there's just a lot behind my screen (white photography curtain, foam mattress, moving blankets).

I also just received 96 acoustic tiles. I need to get some plywood and adhere them, then hang in the cage. My buddy mentioned I may need to take off the sheet rock on the wall between my garage and my bedroom, and replace insulation with sound absorbing insulation. I feel like there must be a cheaper option...

I've heard used JuJitsu mats also work well on side walls, they must also be sound-deading?

Steve51523, the ball does not rebound much at all. The screen goes back less than 6" on impact. The ball just about drops straight to the floor.

Stetson, the foam insulation boards sound like an interesting solution. I might try to attach the acoustic panels to the foam boards, but ultimately attach it all to plywood. I've got a couple of young kids, and as they grow, I'm sure that we'll get our fair share of shanks. That's in addition to the odd shank from myself.

Can you let us know where you purchased your archery screens from? You said you bought 2 and they were inexpensive, but I'm finding them quite pricey... Also, were they already mounted with grommets to let you attach the bungees to all 4 sides? Can you snap a few pictures showing how they are mounted? I'm also curious on one last thing - how close are they mounted to your back wall? I've got a tight space and need to mount as close as possible (hoping for like 6", with 8" being maximum if I have to).

I am in the UK so my source probably not practical for US based folks. When I say they were inexpensive I meant compared to the cost of a similar sized HD type screen , my screen is almost 5 meters by 3 high so 2 times archery screen, were still a fraction of the cost of one HD screen at full retail so it was important to me to get the tech details correct before committing to an expensive HD Screen. Fortunately I got in on Daniels screen and knew that my existing screens would act as a good support to simply overlay the HD screen on and it works great.
The archery weave screens came reinforced with webbing and grommets on all 4 sides . I have a 34 mm tubular enclosure , which I simply threaded ball bungees through the grommets and round the tubular frame . Nice even tension all round and zero ripples, virtually no bounce back. I have a foot and a half behind the screens to the wall as have 5.1 speakers behind the screens , also sounds great , we watch movies and sport also on our system so that was important. I will try to get some pics of how it is mounted , may not be for a while as would have to dismantle carpeting trim etc around the screens to get a good shot and am pretty busy at the mo. Hope this helps .
