Issues with Sound from Impact Screen

Good morning all,

I have been hitting into a net for some time, while I waited for all of the components of my simulator to come in. I never got any complaints from the Mrs. re: noise. I recently installed the enclosure with Direct from the Mill screen (thanks again Daniel). I'm very please with how it looks and performs, but I'm now getting some complaints from the wife about the noise of the ball hitting the screen. Our bedroom is right beside the garage. The screen is on the far side of the garage (not abutting the bedroom wall). I do not have the screen tight. Behind it, I've secured a white photography curtain as well as two moving blankets.

If I were to install memory foam behind the screen, would that absorb some of the sound? I've seen the foam sound insulation squares. Do people install those on the sides of the enclosure? Behind it? Is there a solution that I need to do on the actual wall?

Hey Kmurray thanks for that info. I hope you can snap some pics soon so I can see how you have the screens mounted, but sounds like standard plumbing tubing/pipe?

I am in the UK so my source probably not practical for US based folks.

Actually, I'm finding that your prices there (with $100 shipping even) seems be decent. Unless I'm looking in the wrong place, I've only been looking at West Coast Archery, and their prices are high in USA, I'm tempted to call up the local archery shop, and see what they could do for me, is there a standard thickness, or screen netting I should mention when purchasing?

I bet that's amazing! I would love to consider that too - but can't get the rest of my family into the whole 'home theater' look/sound? I've setup a nice home theater in basement, and their not interested in going down there, so I'm doubtful they will have much interest in going out to my shed to watch a movie, unless it's really, really impressive - which to me sounds like yours would be... Pics/video please when you have time... of the simulator running, and a short clip of a movie running in there would be great to see, when you have some time. I'm busy myself too, and no how hard it can be to find the time.

Is the foot and half that you allowed behind the screens only there to allow the speakers some room? I've seen others claiming 8" to 1 foot working, and I'm really hoping I can make it as tight a fit as possible - and unfortunately I don't know of any way to 'test it out'? Unless someone has mounted there screen on retractable piping that moves closer and further away from the back wall - maybe I should consider that, so I can start with one foot, and then move it in closer and closer as long as I have no wall hits behind it?

Tha archery screens came from here and was just their standard offering. I had samples from virtually every dealer and theirs was the best in terms of quality/closeness of weave etc

My cage is free standing, it is heavy gauge steel tubing with enough weight for it to be stable, if you utilised a cage and did not fix to walls or ceiling you could position it as you wished.
I used a foot and a half because behind the screen I had the space to do that and also to allow the speakers to be placed , but to be honest no balls have ever come close to where the speakers actually are.
My screen set up kills the ball really quickly even with drives , I have a net , then the 2 x archery screens then the mill screen and I believe that a key factor in minimal bounce back and deflection and sound deadening is the support that the netting gives to the other screens.

Thanks Kmurray - wait a minute, so you have netting in front of 2 Archery Screens? Does that have some effect on the projected image? What type of netting is it? I was actually planning on just mounting the Archery netting as my main screen and that's it, there are videos up on YouTube showing that setup and it seems to also work fine.

I took a look at your original post, that is one impressive outbuilding! Mine doesn't come close, as it's a 11.5' by 15' (the bare minimum), and will be completely dark - since I am running ProTee I have to be careful about outside lighting. You have an excellent setup showing how you can have light in the building with the SkyTrak as it does not effect the launch monitor since it also works outside... good job! Did you have your simulator in mind when you built that?

So I tried the 3-inch memory foam behind my Carl's Premium impact screen, and the ball still jumps back several feet on impact. What am I doing wrong, or should I try something else?

Sounds like you have it stretched too tight. If you are using the bungees from Carls, there should be approx. 2" gap between the outer edge of the screen material and the frame.

Here are a few images of my build during fit out showing how the netting and screens were mounted. The image of the archery screen in place was a temporary mount using cable ties, once I was happy with the mounting of the screen I replaced the cable ties with ball bungees on all 4 sides. That method works great as the screen is essentially tensioned evenly from all 4 directions and no ripples.I attached velcro to the webbing of the screen between the grommet holes and used black auto carpet with velcro attached to backside to form trim pieces to cover the mounting system for a clean look.

Thanks Kmurray that is absolutely brilliant! So, you hand built the tubular enclosure with plumbing pipe? It looks like your enclosure netting is behind your archery screen, what type of netting is that on the sides/back/top and where did you find that? Seems I would need that for sides as well, to stop any errant shots from bouncing off my walls and hitting me! What are the dimensions of those side walls - and do you find they stop any shots going left/right?

I read your full description on the other post... sounds like you then glued Velcro all way around the frame and attached carpet? I believe I will end up wrapping my entire tubular frame with foam, as I would be pretty worried about catching any kind of pipe with a ball and having it ricochet back at my head... have you ever had that problem? I see your bottom of archery screen is left hanging - is that right? That's one awesome setup... I'm not sure I will use tubular, but I may - I was hoping to install eyebolts at the back of my structure - directly into a stud, and mount my screen that way, but I see now that poses a problem as I would have no side protection from errant shots - thanks for pointing that out - I'm guessing that doesn't come into play often, but when it does - good to have the sides of your enclosure to stop it.

Yes I built the enclosure with pipe but its not plumbing pipe , its more like small diameter scaffolding tube.
The netting is just general purpose sports netting that I got from the same people as the archery screens came from. I had a single piece for the behind the screen area and a single piece for the roof and sides combined that was cable tied to the enclosure.
Because I used 33mm tube that gave me enough depth to fit foam panels covered in black auto carpet between the uprights and in the roof area of the enclosure . The net alone would not have prevented damage from any wayward shots to walls as my sides of enclosure right up against my walls. The depth of the side panels is around 5 ft.
I wrapped all the tubular that might be struck by a ball in foam , and then made trim pieces from auto carpet that wrapped around the uprights and horizontal tubular members , they attached via heavy duty velcro to the side panels and gave a decent finished look.
I did not leave the bottom of my screen hanging, that was a work in process image , the screen is attached top ,bottom and both sides to the enclosure via ball bungees and I love the even tension and no ripples or bounce back. You have to size your frame and screen to allow for the ball bungees to suspend the screen evenly around the perimeter , works great.
I like having side panels , you are right it does not come into play much but it can and does happen , better to have if you can .
Never had a ball hit the tubular , the area I was concerned with possibly hitting was the bottom horizontal tube , if a worm burner was hit. My enclosure sits on the actual floor of the studio so I wrapped the tubulars that there was a possibility of hitting in foam , then I installed underlay on the floor in front of the lower tubular to a height where after I installed the mat and side turf in the area it was impossible to hit the lower tubular because it was now lower than the mat surface.
