  • FINISHED - Garage Golf Sim

So - after a few posts, lots of reading, a massive spreadsheet and an online shopping spree - my garage golf sim is FINALLY compete. This will be a longer post but want to include many photos to help those that may be looking for the same type of setup. The main thing was needing to still be able to park both of our vehicles in our standard 2 car garage when not playing.

    Parts:
    SkyTraker w/ Metal Cage $2,350.00
    Carl's Place 4:3 120x160 - Raw Preferred $367.95
    EMT Connectors $79.11
    Projector Ceiling Mount $40.99
    Ceilling Curtain Track $64.99
    Tube Clips (1 pack) $9.66
    Tarp Clips w/ Bungees (2 packs) $37.98
    Blackout Side Net $63.99
    MSI Laptop $738.00
    25' HDMI Cable $19.95
    TaoTronics Soundbar $54.99
Wood for Stance Platform / FB Insert $85.00
    Optoma Technology GT1080HDR $864.92
Fiberbuilt - 3 Foot Fiberbuilt Grass Panel with 3 tee holes $249.00
    1" Thick Foam Mat - Amazon $50.00
    Thick Foam - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GZL38J3
    Blackout Side Net - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FDK7ZPC
    Ceiling Curtain Track - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZS6RPJQ

    Step 1

I built the Fiberbuilt Insert and Mat - I opted for doing this DIY as teh 5x4 mat was out of stock and this allowed me also to save a few hundred. I matched up the platform and the top of the Fiberbuilt insert so they are both the same height off the floor. Also by building them as 2 pieces I can rotate and shift around as wear and tear happens.

    Step 2

After a few days all of my pipe connectors came in so I went to Home Depot and grabbed some 1" EMT and got to work. The key here is to measure and measure again - you'll notice I didn't do this and for some reason I thought 8' was 86" vs 96" - oops. My garage has a very thick slab so I needed to cut the pipe in about 2' above the ground to account for this. I have the screen about 14" off the wall and it still sits inside the cabinet which sits around 18" from the wall.

    Step 3

This was the easy step, I used tarp clips to attach the screen to the pipe. I can undo these when I pick it up and store everything behind the screen, it works perfect. I went with the middle of the road Carls screen and so far I'm very happy with it.

    Step 4

Finishing up I had to mount the projector and get with it. THIS IS A PAIN IN THE REAR!!! Who knew how tough projectors were to get perfect, especially 11' in the air. I got it in a spot I'm 90% happy with, the bottom right corner is cut off a little but oh well it plays great.

    Step 5

The only thing left was the netting - I used the HD net from Amazon and the curtain track to do a side net to prevent shanks from bouncing all around, and bought just a cheap net for an overhead protection. Playing today I need to figure out wedges, they are still bouncing off of something and I need to do a few tweaks. Overall, again, 90% happy with everything.

    Step 6 - Overkill

I decided that a couple fans in the garage in Houston mid summer would not cut it so I got a portable AC - this kept the garage around 79-81 all day today when it was 95+ outside. The big thing also is that the humidity in the garage was in the 40's (vs 60-70s outside). I'm going to cut a wall vent in the wall and vent this out the side of the garage so I don't have to do some make shift rigging under the door - will add these photos when it's all said and done.

Time to do some testing now!!

Here is me testing out the sim once I got the screen all set up - https://youtu.be/cq3tAoidFDU

And if you're curious how easy it is to tear everything down - https://youtu.be/HA_Ou_NTDnU

And here is my buddy almost holing out at Augusta today - https://youtu.be/7XSe1K-uZMY

BIG THANKS to everyone who helped answer questions over the past few weeks - I can tell this is going to get a TON of use (oh yea, it also doubles as a movie room for the little one - we already watched "Let it Go" about 10 times and Elsa is life sized!)

Looks good. I put some heavy-duty castors that lock & a handle on my hitting platform. Much easier to roll it into place & pick it up when done.

Great work, Brandon, and thanks for sharing all your details!

Here are the DIY screen enclosure instructions in case others would like to use them: https://gunghogolf.com/articles/diy-...reen-enclosure

When you're ready to really cool the garage off, pick up a mini-split AC off Amazon (I just got a 24,000 BTU unit for $1,100, almost ready to install it). Have struggled for a year with a portable AC here in Austin, looking forward to really cooling things off. Wish I hadn't wasted the $300 on the portable.

I was pretty impressed yesterday. I got a 12k unit and it kept the garage in the upper 70's low 80's yesterday (95+ outside yesterday). The BIG thing also was that the humidity was in the 40% (vs 70%+ outside). This was with me rigging it up under the door, once I get the whole thing done and can seal the door it should be better.

I'd 100% do a mini split but the plan is to sell the house in a year or two so didn't want that investment. The next house will 100% just mini split the garage and be done with it.

Do you have a link to the mini split you purchased?

I agree, from what i've found the portable AC units aren't even as good as window units.

I bought this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UV3LH4Y (Note: it has arrived, but not installed yet, so can't really give it a thumbs up yet. The outdoors unit is large and very heavy, I could barely slide it across the garage floor by myself. But the price is right, and I've got a buddy who owns a local HVAC company who told me these Chinese units which are sold under different brand names are actually pretty good.)

My Black&Decker portable crapped out in about a year - blows but stopped cooling, so suspect a bad compressor.

i had mine professionally installed. it is a Mitsubishi 12k which is what the analysis stated I needed. cost was 4300 but I had no outside walls I could put it on so they had to go through the crawl space and 50 foot run.. works fantastic and reduces humidity better than my home ac. 26.1 seer rating as well

the HVAC guy was here for 12 hours doing the install. would have taken me a week

Awesome setup. Would you mind providing more detail on the mat setup and how you built it as well as the specs? This is EXACTLY what I want to do!
